Hi Everyone,

I have a 2008 SERK, I am having a problem with the neutral light coming on and staying on through these gears after the bike is warmed up.
I have replaced the neutral safety switch to no avail.  Spoke to Harley techs at several locations and no one seems to have an answer.
Can someone help me out to what might be causing this and any fix input would be much appreciated.

Just had the same thing happen to me this weekend & was told it is a bad safety nuetral switch. I should have also said my selling dealer also said they are having a run of bad switches & are on backorder right now. Have not changed it out yet.

i changed switch twice and it did not fix the problem. please let me know how you make out.

The neutral switch when activated completes a circuit to ground.  There is most likely a short to ground on the wire going up to the light.

unplug the connectors at the switch (tape over the ends ) and go for a ride, if the light still comes on your problem is in the wire harness.

My 07 SERK does the same thing, I bought the bike in Sept. 06 and guess the light started coming on a year after i bought it, Everytime i would take it to the dealer it would not come on, Now 3 years later sometimes it comes on, sometimes it don't, I don't even worry about it anymore.

This is an idea for a fix that would fit right in with some Harley shops I've had dealings with:

-Remove the bulb.




Seriously, it appears there is an intermittent short to ground somewhere in the neutral light circuit.  Any tech worth their Harley "Master Technician" merit badge should be able to do a simple wiggle test of the harness and visual inspection of the connections to track it down.  Not exactly the toughest thing in the world to diagnose.

   I see this about one or two times a month. remove the switch and take it to a machine shop and have them remove

   .020 to .025 thou from where the flat serface of the switch contacts the trans cover. luckly i have lathe.    axil

This has been an ongoing battle with my 08 Dyna.  Firs thing they did was replace the switch which of course did nothing.  Then for about $400 they replaced a wiring harness and it was fine.....until I washed the bike and rode it wet.  As long as it was dry it was fine.  Then one hot day this summer my wife was riding it and it started coming on again.  When I told the dealer they couldn't believe it.  It has not worked right since.  They are going to look at it again when I take it in for service the next time, but I don't hold much hope.  I know it can just be disconnected, and isn't a big deal, but the thing ought to work right!

Try putting some Redline in your Tranny and Primary and things start smoothing out and neutral is much easier!(DB)
