New Truck Questions
« on: October 07, 2010, 01:20:23 AM »

Looking at getting a new truck, it's been a few years since I bought a new truck.  Interested in a Dodge 2500 or 3500,(new) '10 or '11, crew, 6.5 or 8' bed, diesel, auto.  Anyone have one and want to share their ownership pros and cons, non-towing mileage both city/Hwy....  I'm not dead set on a Dodge, could be a Chevy/GMC or Ford. Thanks.

We bought a 2011 Ford F 350 Super Duty Dually. The truck is amazing. It has all the bells and whistles you could want. Also is a workhorse.
It has the new 6.7 diesel (400 hp) and the redesigned 6 speed trans. with double overdrive. Has a 3.73 rear end for towing.
The wife gets 15 to 16 mpg around town and I get 17 to 18 on the highway. Also got almost 10 mpg towing our fifth wheel the first time.
We are exremely happy with the truck!

I owned a Duramax for 8 years.  Loved the diesel and miss that torque every day.
If I were buying a new one, it would be hard for me not to go buy the 2011 Ford.  They look great, have a very massive very cool interior and 400HP and 800TQ.  Whats not to like.
The Chevy and GMC are I  think get the best for fuel mileage and are also with in 3-4 HP of the Ford.  The only thing about the GM's are the interior's are just the same old interior as every suburban, avalanche, 1500...
Dodge would be my last choice.  You can't beat a Cummins but the rest of the package does not come close to the GM's and Fords.

I just traded in a Ford F-350 Super Cab with the International Diesel on a Ford F-150 with the 5.4 Liter gas engine.  Happy with the F-150, but I now wish I had purchased a F-250 Crew Cab with the new Ford Diesel W/ six speed.  Miss that torque and towing power.

I feel your pain.  I traded my 2500HD CC 4wd Duramax for an Avalanche.  I love the ride and drive of the Avalanche but, MAN I miss that motor.
Truck was 8 yrs old and dealer gave me 20k on trade and 10k off the new Avalanche.  The Avalanche is an LTZ with every option and is beautiful and I love it.  I have always been a GM man but I would buy the new Ford F250 if I was going to get a new one.  They just look awesome.

To each his own, but for durability and reliability, my money is on GM.  We had Dodges first, then Fords, against my better judgement, but tried to be conservative in the beginning, then, paid up and bought GM since 2001.  GM is the toughest here in the Coalfields, hands down.  Personally, been a GM customer since my first one at the age of 17.  Can't speak for the little Cummins engine, but the ISX's are not very reliable.  Later--HUBBARD

You maybe right about reliability of the GM's.  I have never owned anything but GM.  I will say the reason I traded the 2002 duramax was because of the injector problems that were associated with the LB7's.  Mine were taking a dump at 64k.  GM gave a 200k/7yr warranty to all these trucks, but like I said mine was 8yrs old.  The other problem was the injector fix was to replace with the same faulty injectors.  Cost to replace 8 injectors $6k to $7k.
I recently test drove the new 2011 F250 and the interior and exterior blow the GM's away JMO.
From one GM guy to another I would probably agree with you about the GM being the most reliable.
If I was buying a new one I would get the Ford just cause it looks cool and I think they are all pretty close in "unreliability".

I was a GM guy also, until I bought my 2005 F-250 CC with the 6.0 diesel...kind of like the early 110's....once you fixed the first and common leak the rest of the experience has been and still is a good one.

Shortdog I am seriously looking to trade trucks. I currently have a 06 F350 with the 6.0 and want to trade into something that gets good fuel econ while traveling the country roads in NW IA. How many miles do you have on the 2011? I don't want to be a ginnie pig with a new motor. So just tryin to get some idea of what I'm gettin into if I decide to buy a 2011 with a 6.7.

I'm glad your happy but when did 15 to 16 around town or 17 to 18 on the highway become good mileage?
I have had 2 earlier powerstrokes (02 and 06) and the above mileage is actually less than them.
IMHO good mileage on a truck built to haul a load would be 20 and above.

If you are concerned about mpg's get the GM.  There is a current diesel mag with a shootout of the big three diesel on the news stands now.
I read enough to know the GM's were getting the best fuel mileage of the three.

Supershooter,
We have about 7,000 miles on the truck. Just had the upgrade done on the computer and have seen improvement in the fuel mileage.
