Red Line oil in our engines
« on: March 16, 2006, 07:49:49 AM »

So I did a search and didn't find much relating to using Red Line 20w50 in the engine - primary.
I already use it in the trans and Mobil 1 for the primary and engine.

Any long term opinions on it use, other then in the tranny?

I had emailed Redline on their products for our Harley's.  They recommended 20W50 in the engine (even though they have a 20W60HD for American VTwins), MTL (manual trans lube) in the primary, and Shockproof heavy in the trans..  I am going to try the 20W60HD and already use the other two products.  I think Mobil, Amsoil, or Redline will give us good results.  They are all quality products.

Thanks for the info. Have been thinking of using RedLine in my bikes, but they do not list a motorcycle specific product for the motor. Have used their stuff in all my trannys with great results. RedLine products are at the top of the heap for sure.

Amsoil and redline are too difficult to obtain, (order online or from some distributor) Mobil 1 Vtwin oil is hard to find also. I'm wondering what the difference is in regular mobil 1 20W50 to the Vtwin, probably just the label. Anyone in AZ?

Looks to be that the V Twin is engineered for higher temperature running to avoid oil breakdown and for high performance use that the regular auto oil is not.  Below are the links to data sheets of the Mobil Oil site.  http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Oils.aspx

CVOwner,

The biggest difference I can see is about $4 per quart.  I used Mobil-1 15W50 in my previous '99 Twin Cam starting with the second oil change, with excellent results.  Then Mobil decided to invent a new air cooled V-twin oil specifically for this market, and jacked the price up 100%.  They claim to have increased the anti-wear additives. If you look at the test results in the oil report recently posted on this site, you will see that the 15W50 rated very high in almost every category, so I don't see why it wouldn't be more than adequate.

Rjob,

What I meant was that the V-Twin 20W50 is approximately $4 more locally than the 15W50.  I can buy regular Mobil-1 in most grades for around $4 per quart, but the V-Twin is priced at $8 per quart.  Part of that is retailer (no discounts on V-Twin), but part of it is a higher wholesale price from Mobil as well.  Also, the V-Twin is almost impossible to find unless you buy it mail order, since the local AutoZones stopped carrying it last year.

If I really thought there was a significant difference, the extra $4 per quart wouldn't bother me at all.  For instance, I spend the premium for Redline for my transmission, because I know from personal experience that it works better than what H-D suggests.

Yup, I hear ya.

It seems to me that we got along just fine for many years with regular old oil.  Not to say synthetic isn't an improvement.

Its like butter was bad for you, eat margarine and then it was well butter is actually better than margarine now that we studied it for 20 years.  I just kept eatin' butter because I liked it better.
