Going in to replace the ecm, pulled seat and didn't find it.  Only have had the bike since 9/17/2010, so started to dig.

Watched a few vids on swapping the ecm, and on every other bike it seems to be easy to get to.  Just under the seat or in a caddy off the side of the bike.

Mine?  Has to be under the frame, below the battery box, behind the starter, just in front of the rear wheel, sandwiched between stuff that will make it hard to pull it out the side.  :confused5:

Any tips on the best way to get it out without disassembling half the bike?

Currently I'm going to just cut out all the zip ties and try to pull the battery tray so I can get to it from above.  Wish I had smaller hands.

Thanks for any advise,

Jeff

My recommendation would be to get a manual before just starting to disassemble in order to find the ECM by accident.

Why are you replacing the ECM on a new bike?

My recommendation would be to get a manual before just starting to disassemble in order to find the ECM by accident.

I would agree with you, but originally I didn't think I would need to disassemble anything.  Usually the ECM would be easy to access.  Was expecting to just unplug one wiring harness and deal with a few screws (after pulling fuses, etc).

As for finding it by accident, I actually didn't.  I looked where I expected (under seat) didn't find it, and then looked elsewhere and there it was.

Now back to my original question, any tips on how to get it out without disassembling anything major?

Swapping stock with TMax.  Bike is actually an 09.  Slightly used when I got it.

I should also note that I saw the thread in the CVO Springer section depicting an install on an 08; however, the ecm was right under the seat not where I found mine.

Great question Mr.Magoo I would like to read the answer to that one also.
The answer was actually above your post, but to clarify, this is not a new bike.

I bought it used, it already has some modifications on it (minor) and it is already well past the break in period.  I'm replacing the stock ecm with a thunder max.  Hence the reason I posted this in this thread.  The 110 in it runs hot and lean, and if anything I expected some here to realize at least the side benefits of replacing the ecu.

Since my initial post, I found more information regarding ecm location changes HD has made.  For instance, on the 2010 sporters, HD already relocated the ecm to the downtube behind the rear cylinder.  Also, I have verified that on the 2008 FXSTSSE2, the ecm was where I expected, under the seat.

I don't know if this is one of the changes they made from 08 to 09 like the new rear tire size, or if this is the result of a modification from the original owner.  It's not like I have another FXSTSSE3 to look at.

In any event, thanks in advance to anyone who might actually have some usefull information.

So, for anyone with an 09 Springer (FXSTSSE3), there really is no other way to get to it properly other than to pull the rear fender, pull your rear tire, pull the splash guard, unscrew the caddy that houses the ecm (which locates it below the oil tank), and drop it rearward.

For those of you with an older Springer, enjoy that it is right under your seat.  ;D

suggestion?  I had mine pre-programed for my bike by T-Max,  then I had my exhausts (ture duals) and the T-Max TBW system installed by the Harley dealer.  They charged me an hour for both installs (2hrs) and its done right and if anything goes wrong, or any warranty issues with the bike, HD install!  It's worth $80
