New Ticking Sound
« on: October 18, 2010, 03:57:08 PM »

Just returned from Daytona and on the way back my engine developed a new fairly loud ticking sound coming from the top of the engine.  It is not pushrods as they have been noisy since new but this is a new tick.  Started after I cranked the bike and it backfired through the air cleaner but cranked OK. Had the dealer in Jacksonville do a compression tests and check for codes but all met standards. Said he would have to go into engine to find but it was not normal. Bike runs great but I hate this additional new noise in an already noisy engine.  Any ideas before I go to my dealer?

I have had the same problem for over 15K now and my dealer says that it is just the way the 110 engines are, I personally believe something is going in the engine seeings that it is now vibrating through the bike at higher RPM's. So according to my dealer here, back firing through the breather, burning oil and a loud sound like piston slap that is getting louder and start to shake the bike is normal for the 110 motor. I live in central Florida and am trying to find a dealership that knows what they are doing I am open to any suggestions.

I left mine at my dealership yesterday hoping to get a call back but no calls.  Perhaps they are in the engine, I hope, trying to find the noise producer.  The backfiring through the air filter during cranking turned out to be a bad power commander. Replaced with race tuner and no problems cranking. However, new ticking noise is still there.

A friend of mine has an 09 Ultra that had an unusal ticking. They could never figure it out until they finally took the header pipe apart. The O2 sensor was broken and ratteling inside the pipe. WOW. took the dealer 6 mos to figure it out.

Got my bike back yesterday and Shop Foreman found no problems.  Said 110 engine is noisy and gets nosier with miles.  Mine has 21,500.  After I brought it home, I did remove my remote oil filter which contains three strong magnets and everything was clean with no metal accumulation. My oil only had 1,500 miles on it and it was super clean.  At least I know that nothing has broken apart inside the engine.  I will check exhaust gaskets and oxygen sensors to be sure no ticking noise coming from there as I am sure that dealer did not do a complete search.

Had mine apart for the same problem, ended up being a broken rocker arm support bracket.

Said 110 engine is noisy and gets nosier with miles.

OK if that is the case then Harley has a big problem don't they.
This is not "normal" and there is a mechanical deficiency that needs to be addressed. We have seen a myriad of them with the 110, which is just the same and usual TC96 issues with new additional problems unique to the 110.

First thing ---- Semper Fi!

My rocker arm support assembly broke going down the Interstate at about 80 mph.  I don't remember hearing any new noise untill the support assembly broke, then all hell broke loose.  4,000 miles later no new problems.

My rocker arm support assembly broke

Mine did too. It was cracked at the base plate. I replaced it and the ticking is gone.

As much as I love the BS answers provided by the typically lazy and semi-competent folks at the typical dealership, I would question how a noise that starts suddenly after a backfire is just one more of those "normal" noises all 110's make.  When a noise has a sudden start point, as opposed to something that's been there forever but might gradually get louder as you add miles, it tells me something has changed.  "Normal" sounds don't just start suddenly after 21k miles.

Find a competent shop and have them at least attempt a real diagnosis, as opposed to the crap spouted by your shop foreman.  This doesn't have to be something major, it could be as simple as a loose part like one of the ACR's (which hasn't been uncommon).  Or it could be what several folks have just mentioned, a broken part that won't be found until someone takes a look or it fails completely.  Much better to pull the rocker covers and take a look, versus waiting for it to break.

Semper Fi....

Ya mine started after I had it dyno tuned. Dealer said that rocker arm support, dates back to the 88ci motor. I went will all wood's stuff while it was down.

Basically the same thing here.....................   >:(

Bike leaves the light or curb very labored and unless you keep the rpm's up considerably it will backfire, cough and spit and sometimes die. When it dies it doesn't want to start right up. Kinda rough in the middle of a traffic circle with your poor scared to death wife on the back thinking she's gonna get run over!!

After the second time this happened I started getting the "added" noise over and above the "usual" and unfortunitly "expected" noise. The noise has no definition, it will come and go as it pleases and at many different rpm's. You can not "make" it come on with any certain twist of the throttle. This thing only has approx. 300 miles on it.

I guess I'll run it up to the stealer for the usual "nothing is wrong" ceremony, if nothing else just to cronicle the issue and have it on file. I'll make them note my displeasure and my concern over this locking up at speed and the possible results of that happening................................................................ or......... maybe they will surprise me  :nixweiss:

I am quite certain the backfiring is a product of the lean condition but this is rediculas. If they have to kill an engine to meet epa I think they need to start over.
