engine noise
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:33:27 PM »

When I throttle up I hear a tink tink noise.  It is kind of like when the bike gets hot and you are really working the friction zone in traffic.  The noise is not cyclic but is faintly there.  Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to pull the rate of advance back a tick.

It has not been tuned.  I thought the noise might be due to excessive throttle rate as well but it is still there when I ease it up as well.  It does not do it the entire time I am on the throttle either.  Its just there.

I've been chasing the same thing for over a year.
I found it last Sunday, nothing to do with the bikes running gear.

On the inside leg of my windbreaker over pants is a metal male end snap, at a certain speed and wind condition it flaps against the horn cover and tings.
I have stopped many times thinking something is loose or it was pinging, I also reduced the timing at different rpms, no change.
I just happened to see the pant leg flap into the horn cover when the ting occurred, by luck looking at something I avoided on the road.

I thought it was something I had on or loose as well.  But this weekend I went onto the BR parkway and the engine sounded terrible.  The ticking noise was very obvious but only when I pulled the throttle.  Very easy pull or really on it!  I am taking it to the dealer on Tuesday.  It is almost like the engine is overheating, but it was in the high 40's and I was moving the whole time.??????????????? :confused5:

The dealer just called and has reported that they found an issue with the cam springs....I guess they were about to fail.  Sounds like that could be it....I guess.

Glad they caught it, I would consider yourself lucky you didn't chalk it up as just a noise and brought it in for a look see.

Good call.  :2vrolijk_21:

There's no such thing as cam springs....   Maybe valve springs?

What exactly did they say they found wrong?

Here's a thought.
Ask the dealer to write down on the service order exactly what is wrong.
Then the motor guys on this site like Mr. sadunbar or others can call BS on it or agree.
What a novel concept.

It is a dealer.  I spoke to the GM on the phone and he is the one who said cam tensioner springs.  I havenot spoken to the mechanic yet but will.  Additionally, I will have them write it all down.  Thanks foor the advice and another sleepless night.

Do you STILL have this issue? Even after a tune?  :nixweiss:

Reason I ask is that we had a 2011 that had the same symptoms after the dealer "Stage one" download and "tune" out here. Rider was not happy.
He made the decision to go with TTS, and we played with the spark tables. Problem gone!
