Polished aluminum cases (or wheels or whatever) look good.  When they're first done.  Then they're a maintenance headache forever to maintain that appearance.  Only way I'd ever even consider it would be if the polished cases were covered with clear powder coat.

No, I'm wrong.  Wouldn't even consider it then.  Not unless the bike is trailer and show queen.

As someone who had their own powder coating business for several years, I would agree with the above.  If you're going to go through the expense of polishing the cases, wheels, or whatever, you should definitely have them powder coated with a clear.  You should never have to polish them again.  Keep in mind though that the clear will dull the finish slightly.

thanks for your input Yellowhog, I will post some other pic's of my build so you get a idea where I'm going with this but would you powder coat the cases with a paint in like silver the way our CVO's are or would you cover them in chrome. Or I could still polish them with a clear coat. I will post some pic's in my Fatboy build update.

It's a matter of personal taste.  I personally prefer the granite powder coating (OEM) with polished cylinders (maybe even diamond-cut).  the contrast is more attractive, but again, that's only me.  Whatever you decide to do, make sure you find a reputable powder coater who stands behind his work.  You sure don't want any problems with faulty coating...

Thanks again for all your help, the cases are getting powder coated. Going back to Kevin at Ultra Coat in New York. They did the Jugs and I am very happy with there work. I will post pic's as soon as I get them back. Thanks again, I wish I knew you did powder coating, I like to work with other CVO guys.

Never mind the cases WTF is this bike ? The frame (Gooseneck) is straight outa the 60's and yet unless my eyesight is bad, I'm looking at a TC motor. OR perhaps this is a late model FL frame with a whole bunch of bondo on the neck ?

A friend of mine has a 2009 SG and after he washes the bike he sprays Armor All (black casing) on his engine.  I haven't tried it yet, but his casing looks great, no smell, and apparently no residual fading or anything becasue he's been doing this now for 2 years?

2002  flhtcui  that met the driver side door after a Daytona police officer pulled out in front of it. Officer at fault but since law enforcement is not at fault in Fla...I stretched the neck 1.5" and raked it out 7.5 degrees. There is no bondo in the neck. It is all ground weld...my first attempt :nixweiss: Rides better than my other 2 dressers :2vrolijk_21:

Interesting. That's a lot of welding, Why not gusset plates ? Seems like you put a gawd awful amount of heat into your frame in a really critical area. Don't suppose you had it de-stressed after all the welding ? Hard to tell it's a bagger from the shots you posted. Got any more. Would like to see the rest of the bike. 7.5 degrees What's a stock bagger 28 ? That'd give you a total of 35.5. You must be running something in the neighborhood of 4" over stock fork tubes ? And with a 1 1/2" of stretch. How's it handle at slow speeds ? Oh yeah, nice about FL Cops not being held respondsible for their actions. Real nice.

We cut the frame in half, added a box channel wut with the angles needed to make it right. By using the channel we could put the wires and cables into the frame.

As to the heat...we dunked the neck into hot oil after welding and let the oil and neck cool to room temp. I sent the frame to Calif and they checked it out for straightness and they had to do nothing with it. They sent it back and then we droped it off at the painters....who screwed it up....the paint job that is.

At slow speeds you can ride it with out putting your feet down because of the 200 rear tire.....moving around a parking lot is a bit  more work.

Front forks are stock 2006 FLHX and the rear is 10.5" Arnotts....sits .25" higher in the front...till my fat ass gets on it :huepfenlol2:
