I went to the Heat Demon site, and it looks like on the 2010 SEUC the handlebars need to be reamed out for them to fit. Is that correct, and how does that effect the drive by wire throttle? If the handlebars need to be modified  -- any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I have the new chrome H. D. mount for the Garmin Roadtech 660, and that looks like where the switch mounts.

Well boys and girls, here is the latest on the heated grips. I followed thru with Jerry's advise, and went back to the dealer that had my bike for two weeks to get an OK from H.D. to change out my noisy lifters (they did install new lifters, but charged me for adjustable push rods) and check out my heated grips. I asked the service manager for the specs they used to determine that my grips were good. He stated there were "no specs" put out by H.D. as to temperature, --- if the grips come on, that is all H.D. cared about. I had him call H.D. while I was there, and they affirmed  --  if the grips come on -- they work, and there is no heat temperature specs from H.D.   Watch out, I guess with that logic, if you loose second gear, oh well, the trans still works. Today I called H.D. support line and got the exact same response from the person on the phone, and also she let me talk to a "tech", that gave me the same answer. He then asked me how my dealer checked the grips. I told him with a heat gun. He said that was not the proper way to check the grips. This CLOWN  says to put a thermometer between your hand and the grip and drive down the road. He says it should be about 105 degrees. I told him the dealer read my grips to be 96 and 100 degrees and even at 105, that is barely above my body temperature. He said that was as good as it gets. I explained the CVO Harley site and the answers from you guys that are getting 130 degrees on medium setting. He had no response, except sorry but your grips are working. I then told him these are just some of the reasons that H.D. is going into the sh*#ter and that I have been a loyal H.D. rider for many years, but that will be changing soon if my warranty did not cover a set of $200.00 bad grips on a $40,000.00 bike. His only response was -- is there anything else we can do for you sir. I am writing a letter to H.D. tonight. I am sure that will be in the trash in a couple of days. By the way, two dealers cannot feel the vibration in the brakes that I have talked about on this site before. They say my bike is no different than any of the other bikes they have ridden.  OK -- so just because the other bikes they have ridden vibrate like mine  -- THERE IS NO PROBLEM??? That is some kind of H.D. logic.

I put the HD "reach" handlebars on mine after I got the bike.  I am still using the Harley heated grips (knock wood) but I had the "reach bars" reamed oversize by a local machine shop to accept the "Heat Demons" if I had to install them in the future.

I can't remember the size opening needed in the bars for the Heat Demons, but if you call Symtec the manufacturer, they will tell you the internal size opening required.   Don't know what the size opening of our stock bars is.

And yes, the Heat demons work perfectly with the TBW as we have the Demons on my wife's 09 FLHX..

FWIW-this is all I know on this.  Good luck.

From my CVO service supplement, there is a lot of diagnostics involved with determing which grip is bad but gives no way of checking temperatures..

There is a "current draw" test"

1-turn ignition on

2-With the heated grips turned off, using harness connector test kit HD-41404-B and a multimeter, measure the current draw accross (64-2B) socket terminal 3C and terminal 3D..

3-Turn the heated grip control to the maximum setting while watching the current draw.

4-Does the current draw increase to approx 3 amps above the original reading?

Yes-OK, system functioning normally

No-Go to test 3

Just had mine replaced the right was the bad one, but HD only warranty one at a time. They ordered the left one first, still didnt work ( No S*&t) so then they overnight the right grip. That completed the circuit now it works. I think I'm going to put those demon X2 in my wifes bike

Just another data point, but regarding the high failure rate, one thing I've seen several times (and it's happened to me personally) is that if the grips get too hot, either from leaving them on high for a long time or just ambient temps (116 in Texas this year), the glue will melt.  Once the glue goes, the grips will rotate until the thin little wires inside twist up like a stick of licorice and snap off.  If you don't use a throttle rest (I do) you'd never even notice it happening...

Best just to install the Heat Demons and never look back. It just doesn't make sense to keep going back to the dealer and changing out the HD ones over and over just because warranty will or might cover it. First time mine acted up they came out and the Heat Demons are way better and always work and heat up faster. Thanks again Jim (HDDUDE)

I had a set of the Aileron ones (fbw throttle), that I was going to have installed on my 09 FLHX,
bike was just totaled and they never went on .
The dealer who sold me my 2011 FLHXSE2 (best thing I ever bought in my life), had a "special trick" to install them on CVO with internial wireing (moco says cant be done).
Yoo-freakin-hoo their the best thing since women...
On 3 in 50 degree weather, and too hot with gloves, had to lower to 2 and was perfect.
I guess 7,8 or 9 is for sub-zero weather.

My 08 CUSE heated grips are working, although I always thought they could be a bit hotter, particularly on the hottest (6) setting.  I can feel the heat thru my winter gloves so I feel they are working to their potential.  The seat heats great; low is all I can stand.

Now while some are having trouble with their heated grips, be glad you don't have a GW.  They are having lots of trouble with their seat and grips.  They use a complex system with thermistors in the seats and a controller that is supposed to measure seat temp and adjust accordingly based on operator's setting.  The controller is the weak link and malfunctions often leaving the grips AND seat cold.  Some have rewired using HeatnSafe controllers cause Honda just can't seem to get a robust controller.

When mine were not working adequately I took the bike in----Stealership told me they either work or they don't---when they don't we will repair/replace them---A few weeks after that the clutch side shorted out and the throttle side melted onto the handle bars ---they ended up relacing them and the handle bars as well---they could not get them off....

I went to the Symtec web site to check out the Heat Demons and it says that they don't fit the CVO Road Glide. I know you guys are using them, why does there Website say this? Did you have to do something special to make them work on your CVO RG? :nixweiss:

Also I am planning on installing Paul Yaffe's 12" Monky Bars, any issues with these other than having the ID reamed to .875"?

That is what another member here did with a Street Glide.

you will have to lengthen the wires. I just did a set for a friend on his bike. Make sure to stagger the solder joints so they won't bunch up in the bars.

Shocking, my heated grips actually worked this past weekend...about two hours into the ride I decided, what the hell, try them.  They worked!!!  :)  Don't know why they're intermittent!!!!!  :nixweiss:
