heated hangrips
« on: October 22, 2010, 08:40:46 PM »

Has any one ever put an infra-red gun to their heated handgrips? I have had mine to the dealer insisting they do not get very hot. On setting (6) I cannot feel them thru my gloves, and on bare hands, you can feel them, but they are only slightly warm. Dealer insisted they are working fine. They tell me after 10 minutes the left grip is (100) degrees and the right grip is (96) degrees. Well, since your body temperature is 98 degrees, that is barely at body temp. That does not seem very warm in IMO.  They refuse to replace, as they say all is fine.  My 2006 Ultra had heated grips and they got hot. Dealer thinks the 2010 might have  been "toned" down so they do not burn up like previous years. Sounds like bull&^$* to me. Any suggestions??

I have the very same bike and my grips get very hot. I do have the same kind of person at my dealership that will tell you anything when he don't know what to do.

2010 SEUC I keep mine on 3 when its cold and they are very warm. Will get hotter if I turn them up. Your dealer is blowing smoke.

There's a simple way to cut the BS; tell the "ace" at the dealership to show you the specification from H-D in writing.  And if he can't find it, invite him to call the Tech hotline at H-D, with you sitting next to him listening in, and have them give him the spec if they can.  Assuming your guy and the tech line guys can't come up with the official performance specifications, then have the "ace" pull another bike in that's equipped with heated grips and park it next to yours, then set both to max heat and measure the temps.  If all else fails, file a complaint with H-D customer disservice.

It's a real shame that so many people in Harley shops seem to think it's perfectly fine to make up chit as they go, versus taking the time to get the facts.  Of course, when the mother ship sets the example by doing the same sort of thing, I guess it's not surprising when the peons follow their lead.

And BTW, when the bike is out of warranty do yourself a favor and don't pay for more of the same crap from H-D.  There are other alternatives from the aftermarket for heated grips that work better and last longer.  Rewarding H-D for supplying crap by purchasing another set from them after your warranty expires is something only a masochist should consider.

 :2vrolijk_21:     Good advice!

Of course, given the failure rate of MOCO heated grips, it may have to be a sampling of a handful of donor bikes from the showroom floor to find some that actually heat properly....   ::)

When you give up on the MOCO heated grips, try "Symtec Heat Demons".....     :2vrolijk_21:

 Heat Demons X2.
Terry's stock heated grips went out shortly after buying his bike. It was a no brainer to get the Heat Demons....why keep going back and forth to the dealer for eventual failure. Terry has had the Heat Demons on his bike for 3 years and no problems at all. They heat better also.

2Harleys, I just came back from a 1475 mile trip from Simi Valley,Ca. to Tuscon Az. stopping at Laughlin Nev, then Prescott.(Oct. 14 thru today the 24th) Going from Laughlin to Prescott on Monday it was raining pretty hard on occasion and at one point there was snow on the side of the road. I used my heated grips quite a few times and with medium weight gloves setting number 3 was very toasty and of course I could feel it thru the gloves. I have used setting 4, but it gets too hot. I have never gone to 5 or 6. Also the heated seat is actually a little too hot on the high setting. Good luck with your dealer. Feel free to show him a copy of this. CAHDBIKER

I am on my second year with heat demons.  no complaints.  already they have outlasted my moco heated grips.

I had previously gone through 3 pairs of harley heated grips.  all failed within a year or so. ~$200 a pop ..  what a waste of money.

Yep.  And they work great with the stock grips....just enough metal to heat up fast.  Internally  wired with that neat little chrome switch and colorful led lights.  I remember 2Lane and others touting how great they were and boy were they right.  Use 'em a lot with these tired ole paws.  ;) har.  :drink:spyder
