Wobble
« on: October 23, 2010, 04:25:54 PM »

'05 SEEG with 30K miles.  Bought it used three years ago - 10K and in showroom condition.  The bike has the "Harley Wobble" at higher speeds through sweeping turns.  "Raised" the bike back to "Std." height - Longer damping rods and Progressive springs with 15 wt. Bel-Ray in the front and Progressive 440's (13") in the back.  Added a Bagger Brace with minimal improvement.  I also have an '03 Road King with 60K miles.  Same suspension set-up (no Brace) and the RK handles like it is on rails.  Looking for thoughts / ideas to make the SEEG handle as well as the RK.  Checked the steering and it was OK (within HD specs).  Need new tires (wobbles regardless of tire condition) so I am planning on looking at the swingarm bushings and wheel bearings.  Any other ideas?

Check the steering neck bearings to make sure they are tightend down. That was my problem.

My 08 SERK was a wobbling nightmare at 75 plus, when mentioned to the MoCo they change the subject or headed to the lunch room.  The have a very old frame and QC problem that has caused very serous accidents.  Braces are ok but you have to make sure the wheels in alignment or your just bracing it out of alignment.
A good MC frame shop can help or take a look at Jake at Glidepro's vids on checking it. Be VERY careful as this is a HUGE safety issue!  The MoCo slaps bikes together on jig, then if you compalin they have a poorly designed tool that they check it with.  Once you get things in alignment the wobble stops, and you feel like your riding a new bike!  Be sure to have steering head bearings, swingarm bushings and wheel trueness checked also.  The picture attached is the alignment of my bike before correcting, the rear wheel was making a right hand turn 3/4" in every 6' while the front tire was leaned to the left 3/8"

rebelhoop,
Were the lasers attached to the disk brake?  If so, what if the disk is warper?  This looks like a very interesting procedure to have done to be sure your frame is straight, but was it expensive?

If the disk was warped you would feel it when braking.

After watching Jake at Glide-Pros' video, I have a much better understanding.  Thought you adjusted the "frame" somehow, but videos are just outstanding to a novice like me.

The owner of Glidepro, Jake, is a good guy, my frame is so out of line the it ruined his front mount.  After much discussion he sent me a new mount at no charge and some ideas on how to keep it from happening again.  There are cheaper mount systems but it's nice to have professional personal assistance.  I bought the lasers from Sears and plan to check my alignment every year as a maintainence item.  My local dealer is considering replacing my frame but wimpering and doing thier best to avoid dealing with it.

mjb765 is right if the rotors are warped you feel pulsing and vibration in the bike as you apply the brake, my  08 SERK warped 7 front rotors before my local dealer finally replaced the front wheel.  Most dealers know of the wheel casting alignment problems, they avoid it as it costs about $2,300.00 to repair.

Appreciate the response.  Sent Jake an email about his products for an '09 and he already replied, on a Sunday.  He hopes to announce his new products for '09 - '11 after Thanksgiving.  Looking forward to that announcement.  Good luck with the frame replacement.

Steering neck tightened....rides much different now, I took the bike back to the dealer to make sure there wasn't a problem. Tech said steering neck was really loose.  :pepper:

Hi, your lucky.  I just got my bike back from the local dealer, they changed the main frame.  Too early to say for sure but hopefully all is well.

I had the same problem with a roadlglide and crashed. its most likely the rear cleave block bushings.  check the torque mine were 25 the should be around 40ft lbs depending on your years manual. also if the improved it put a swing arm stabalizer. I put a alloy art system and am very happy with the handlling triple digits aren't so scary anymore

This is very nice using the lasers to cross paths to see if the front and rear are in line.  But from what I read, and I'm not well versed at all on the motor mount cradle assembly, the motor mount cradle assembly is held at the rear in the main frame with the swing arm pivot mounts and the front end can be swayed from side to side depending upon the mount positioning.  And then the rear axle that the wheel / rotor mounts to can ALSO be tweaked, so if you don't know if your motor cradle assembly is square with the frame, how can you use a laser on the rotor to align the bike?

Just wondering.
