How could it have been a good time? 
No pre-planning!
No California sun!
No pre-rides!
No restaurant reservations!
Actually Marty and I put many hours of accumulative time into finding a motel that: Was somewhat in the middle of LA and SF; Was inexpensive and didn't require a 2 night minimum; Wasn't on the coast as our previous 2 MITM; Was in a rural location; Provided a decent ride to and/or from if wanted; Was located within walking distance to at least 2 restaurants; and had safe parking for the bikes. I also called all of the 3 nearby restaurants to see if they could accommodate us, menu's, prices etc.
Also, although no pre riding was done many hours were spent finding a route that was off the beaten path, and would get us there by 4:00. Alternative roads had to be chosen as a back up since some of the roads were one lane and goggle couldn't decipher weather they were paved or not. Gas, restroom and munchie stops were plugged in the gps also since we didn't want to stop at a one pump rural station with a bunch of bikes.
Nothing like planning the once a year GTG, or even a group weekend trip, but we didn't just wing it either.
