Ideas for a drop in Motor 09 frame
« on: October 25, 2010, 07:53:29 PM »

Just about tired of all the heat this thing produces and looking for something to replace it.
I am not convinced working this motor would be cost effective compared to just replacing it.

Interested in some opinions from the folks around here......  :2vrolijk_21:

What say you :nixweiss:

Thanks

It's called a "Gold Wing", otherwise, suck it up, until MoCo drops a water cooled, either partial or fully, engine in the touring models...Not likely either.

Or move to Minnesota where you could truly appreciate the heat it puts out.

Dick, have you looked at the Jims catalog? They do some very interesting things with the Harley 110 cubic inch motor. They do a 116 cubic inch kit and a 131 cubic inch motor.  On the other hand, I have an S&S 112" in my Titan. It has been monstrously powerful and bullet proof for 12,000 miles.  I am not sure if their motors are really suitable for touring bikes.  Mighty worth some investigation.

Dick,
Unfortunately, I just think that's the nature of the beast on an air-cooled engine.  Even my  02 Ultra with an 88ci engine would give off excessive heat in the summer and actually caused more discomfort on my right leg than the SE does.  My SESG is a lot cooler than my SEURG.  Could it be because the SESG doesn't have lowers?   :nixweiss:  I'm sure that contributes, but otherwise, they are virtually the same.  With the EPA restrictions being applied, these bad boys are going to run hot.  I don't think water-cooling is the answer either.  My 85 BMW L100 and my 86 Wing were both water-cooled and they were ovens during the warmer months too.   :nixweiss:  Try removing your lowers and see if that helps you any.

I agree it has alot to do with the EPA, I had the (103) 06 SEUC.......wasn't too bad compared to the 09 (110).

Many times I wish I had that motor, for some reason I think in many ways it out performs the 110. JMO

I can sit in traffic for 5 minutes and this thing is wanting to cut out (dying to get some air under it).  >:(

Warranty is gone in a few months and trying to decide whether to drop a motor in it or just extend the warranty and let MOCO worry about the issues. I always purchaced the extended warranty, and always worked out in my favor  :2vrolijk_21:

Just looking at the opinions of the folks here.........mainly because I am not a gear head  8)

My son has a friend who lives in Florida and makes a hobby out of dropping in V-Rod water cooled engines into the touring bike frames.  My son rode one of the Roadking versions and said that it had outstanding performance and looked factory. Different path but looks like a promising future.

Big air cooled engines are going to run hot, and the EPA lean regs make it worse.

Cams with more overlap help , but unless you are moving there will always be some issue.

And I agree with the watercooled not being a big improvement, my FJR1300 puts out lots of heat at stop lights too, not quite as much as my 103" Street Glide , but you can see the temp gauge climb .

Keep them moving and all is well.

Dick W, sorry for that "direct" comment, but that's the why it is.

Best thing you can do is pull the lowers, or buy a Vrod.

Well, based on the wonderful EPA "we don't talk politics here" MoCo will probably go electric before you ever see a water cooled engine in a bagger...Lol

Dick on my 10 SEUC it ran very hot until I openned the intake and exaust and had it re-tuned. Believe me it was a warm summer here in Arizona. Just recently I was getting that notorious pinging when I rolled onto the throttle at 2800-3500 rpm and so I took it in to Harley and they retarded my timing 3 degree's on both cylinders and now BLUU runs like a raped ape and is much cooler running.

Last time I checked the only company offering a direct replacement engine for your bike is JIMS, and I don't know that I'd consider them to be any better than H-D in terms of quality or customer service.  It's not like it was back in the EVO days, when there were about six different companies like S&S, TP Engineering, etc. offering direct replacements.

Find yourself a good engine builder and have him transform your stock engine into something reliable.  And if your only complaint is the high temps, don't get your hopes up about eliminating that.  Internal combustion engines are hot.  Bigger internal combustion engines generate more heat than smaller ones.  Some tuning changes can help, at the cost of efficiency, and some shielding can help with the amount of heat that radiates onto the rider from the engine and exhaust.  But there is no silver bullet in a crate that will eliminate the heat issues.

I just sent Zippers my concerns, let's see what they come back with.

I have no problem doing a build (well not me).

I have opened it up with a breather and pipes and a good tune, still ain't cutting it. After 30,000 miles and warranty getting ready to be gone........it's time.

I want better  :coolblue:
