Ever Enter A Bike Show?
« on: March 19, 2006, 10:29:11 AM »

Here in KC this weekend, the World Of Wheels coincides with the "American Bike Show", or something to that effect.

Anyway, a guy had a 1996 Bad Boy entered, and nobody knew what it was. The JUDGES of a motorcycle show had never seen, or heard of one. They refused to accept it as stock class due to it's blacked out forks and unique paint job.

Has anyone entered their bike in a show, and had this happen?

Additionally, a local HD dealer wouldn't cop to the often stated complaint that the MoCo makes too many CVOs now. Gave me the "They never tell us how many they build, but 3500 of each model sounds about right."

I have wondered about these classes myself, I have entered and won a few shows in the "Stock Touring" class with my 1995 RK but at other shows been told I needed to be in the "custom" class - which means I didn't stand a chance against the fat tired softails. At what point do you go from stock to custom?

My dealer does an annual cruise night, blocks off the whole center of town. I entered the dealer bike show mainly because for the $5 entry fee you get "preferred" parking, in a neat row behind caution tape.

My SEEG took 1st place in the full dresser category, and that was after doing over 300 miles that day on a run.

That was cool

About 9 years ago I entered a custom I built in a few shows, it was cool. I even won 1st in the custom class, even cooler. Then about two weeks later at a local event my scoot up and found a new home. :'( The cops even watched them do it. :-/ How cool is that.  Insurance did pay, so I got to build another even cooler one. ;)

Took second place 2 tears ago at the washington state rally in the bagger class with the SEEG.  Have entered a couple of others and didn't make the cut go figure.

I've got three trophies and a couple of wall plaques........all for the last two Ultra Classics that I had.  Strangely enough, non for the SEEG. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Never had a problem with the classes thow.

Yeah, I entered in a small local show and won the class with my SEEG. There was a small discussion about it being stock but another participant verified it to the judges and they were convinced.

I have entered more shows than I can count over the past 20 years. I have an asortemnt of trophies for different bikes in different catagories. The last one was here in Dago about 6 years ago. I took home Best Custom and People's Choice for a ground up stretched Chopper Guys frame FXR. Best in show was ----- what else, a softail. However, I sold the bike to a guy in Maine who walked away with Best in Show at at Statewide Rally there. Anyway, bike show rules are established by the promoter - - period. There's no book out there to turn to page whatever when you get into an argument. What is a custom at one show isn't at another and so on. I've been told that only altered stock frames and custom frames constitute a custom and I've been shoved into the custom class with no frame mods at all. You can really get your ego bruised at these shows or you can do well depending on a lot of things, but the Number One thing at any bike show I ever entered was PAINT - - - -just ask Russell Mitchell about that.Beyond that clean is always good as opposed to cluttered and busy.Usually in Dealer and MoCo shows, the stock class is how well you carry a theme and use factory parts. Bottom line IMHO, never enter a show just to win a trophy. Enter to show your ride with pride- - - - period. Anything beyond that should be icing on the cake.

adios

Sure would enjoy some pics of both your bikes, but particularly the panhead.  Always wanted one.

Neanderpaul,

Well, since I own a 1996 BadBoy Springer (blue stripes), I know the feeling of "hey, what is that?" I often get told "hey, nice work on the black-out job, dude".   But, every once-in-a-while someone comes up and knows what the hell it is. It's tough to think back 10 to 12 years ago when the big "Harley Boom" was really picking up momentum. About half of the biker folk I know didn't get into bikes until about 5-6 years ago. Hence, they wouldn't know a BadBoy from a Fat Boy. So, I feel for the guy that entered his ride (with pride....thanks, Brian) and was judged by a Judge that probably had no business judging. What can you do...?

About the volume of CVO bikes that are rolling out of Hucking Farley's doors?...well, I think they are making more SEEGUC's this year than they made BadBoys in 1996. Is this a good thing? Bad thing? Well, bad paint aside I doubt there will be many left over. In the end....I hope everyone has a bike that they like to RIDE. It is still about riding isn't it? That's what got me into bikes many years ago and keeps me going...

Life is too short to ride great bikes poorly....

From being a past Activities Director for my HOG chapter and having to organize a bike show this is a question that often arises. My thoughts on what made a bike custom over stock was that the parts and accesories added where H-D and available to everyone then the bike would remain in the stock class. If the bike had a H-D limited number factory paint job (which would not be available to everyone since they are a limited production/number) then it should go into a "custom" class. I have found that however you make the rules somebody isn't going to be happy, and as it has been stated before each show/event can be different.

As "Big B" stated, best reason to enter a bike show is to show your pride and joy, and your efforts to make your bike represent you.
