Hi,
In some of my previous post i have been asking questions related to exhausts, tuners, and overall performance. the reason, i had a 2007 road glide with Redshift cams, Rinehart true duals, thundermax tuner, high flow air cleaner that ran unbelievable and sounded great. this august, i sold it and bought a 2010 CVO Ultra. I have about 3,000 miles or so on it and i have been struggling with the thought that my old 07 would probably outrun it through 4th gear? so after speaking with one of the techs i know pretty well at my local HD dealer, and the e-mail you will read below, both of them recommended the Zippers 575 redshift cams. none the less, i thought i would cut and paste his comments. Agree or disagree, a very interesting perspective that i thought i would share with the group.
Nick, you are not alone. The newer engine is just plain anemic straight from the factory (even the 103 & 110). In order to pacify the DOT and the EPA (both of which Harley is single handedly to blame for drawing attention to the motorcycle industry) the engines are severely detuned. My suggestion is to start with Zippers. They are my go to guys on all things Thunder Max or Zippers. The engine displacement is big on your bike but you are right, a well tuned 95 incher will run all over the newer engines. I am going to recommend a set of cams to begin with. That is a great place to start.
As far as your warranty…pardon my French but f$%* the factory. They sold you a bill of goods in a warranty. It isn’t like the car business warranties that you sell at work and that I sold at the Ford store. The HD extended warranty is just a way of binding you indefinitely to the dealership. Make no mistake; HD sells an “un-finished” motorcycle to every single customer that buys one. Even at the $40k mark that yours lists for there is still much to do to meet your expectations. If I were you I would cancel the extended warranty and use that $$ to buy the go fast chit you want.
You (and every consumer) are protected by the Magnusson Moss act of 1975. You can change your bike to suit your needs. The only thing that Harley can void your warranty on is something directly related to a change you make on their bike which is usually replacing an inferior part they manufacture. For instance; you could replace your stock 6 speed with the new Baker 7 speed and Harley still has to warranty your radio.
Harley builds a solid bike (even if it isn’t as fast as you expect) but they know that you will want more power that is why they spend millions to produce Screamin Eagle parts catalog every year. I just turned 95,000 miles on my Road Glide and I still have the stock top end. Doesn’t leak, doesn’t burn oil. If you want to make some horsepower you are going to need to get with one person and listen to them. I trust Zippers, they have ALWAYS done me right.
You can also email your map to Zippers and they will look it over. There might some help there too.
You have a ton of money tied up in your bike but that doesn’t mean that you can’t expect a little better performance. That is why the aftermarket business is so huge. God bless capitalism! I hope this helps you. As always…if I can help you I will. Have a great day.
