My Son's First Harley
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:16:46 PM »

Hey All,

I've been informed by a friend that I'm an a$$hole for not sharing this right away. (I thought we'd established my a$$holedom years ago.  ;D ) But I don't want neglect my duties any longer so...

I thought I'd share a pic of my son's new ride.  He's only 15, so it's a bit early but I got a wonderful deal from Schaeffer's Harley Davidson so I bought the bike now.

Why am I buying my son a V-Rod? Well, when he was in second grrade I made a bet with him.  Stay on Honor roll till you're 16 and I'll buy you a Harley.  I never figured on it being a V-Rod  :o .

At any rate, he's made it this far and he's working even harder now so that he has a shot at the Coast Guard academy.  Since the great deal came up I bought it now and will pick it up from the dealer in March, in time for his b'day.

He had no idea it was coming.  The dealer put it in the "featured" bike section and put a sign on it that said "Surprise Sean!"  Everyone at the dealer knows him since he helps out at many MDA functions and also is a HOG member and sells the 50/50 tix.  So he was wondering why everyone was staring at him as he walked in.  He was headed for the rest room and never even saw the bike until the one sales guy called his name.  When Sean looked over he had a camera.  Chris (the sales guy) pointed at the bike and then Sean saw it and did a classic three count double take.  I have to get those pics because it will be photographic evidence of a teenager with a slack jawed open mouth smile.

At any rate, he's happy and I'm broke.  But it's all worth it.  The next couple of years riding with my son will be worth any extra years I'd have to work to make up the money spent.

Ride Safe,
JC

P.S.  To any who noticed... Just because this V-Rod is SILVER BLUE and BLACK do not think that I'm not still 100% a$$hole... I'm just sayin.   :P

Wow, can't wait to see the other pics. What a great thing to do for a son. And YOU kept the promise. Job well done. My parents told me no bike unless I wanted to get a job. Well that didn't work for them as I did and bought it myself even if it was only a mini trail 50. Congrats to your son and You.

I think there's a formula for this story  (good parenting + kid who believes what he's told by them = excellent outcome)  Here's hoping Sean doesn't run away on his new V-Rod and forget he's suppose to join the Coast Guard to see the world  :o  Seriously, congrats all round

He's a great son.  Better then any parent has a right to hope for.

We actually were looking at an '05 SE V-Rod but I really wanted him to have ABS which obviously negated the '05.  The larger gas tank is nice to.

I'd like to say that I did something special, but all I did was tell him the truth, Keep my promises and gave him the respect he earned.  That may be uncommon, but I know other's who've done the same.  I'd offer advice when asked, sometimes when not asked but when I saw it was needed.  The only other thing I've done is not forget what it was like to be a kid (since I never grew up, that's easy).  I know many of my former partying, hell raising friends suddenly think that their children shouldn't wouldn't couldn't do the same stupid stuff they did.  BS!  I did it.  My dad did it.  We lived.  Hopefully I've given Sean the tools to know when he's getting in too deep and get out before the kaka hits the ventilator.  If not, I guess he runs away on the V-Rod.  And damnit... That thing's faster then Nemo.  :'(

Ride Safe,
JC

Cool very cool!     :2vrolijk_21:

So let's start with the obvious,
Quote
I've been informed by a friend
You have a friend?

OK, well maybe 3, Sean, Malinda and possibly 1 more.
But all that aside,
Congrats Sean and congrats JC!
A promise kept is a very good thing.
Besides getting a V-rod Sean is also getting a lesson in integrity.
JC, I know your proud and rightfully so.
Sean is very lucky to have an asshole like you for a Dad!
Now get him enrolled in some beginner classes and then some skilled classes.
There is no such thing as too much experience when riding a bike.

SBB

and get it right, DUH, it's "silver"  "black" then "blue"!

Wow, JC what a great kid or should I say young man. Anytime you have a son that will come and help MDA with a bunch of old farts now thats a great person in my book. Congrats to both of you and one more thing, I always see your son in your pic - what a great dad as well. As a parent I know how you feel I have 3 great kids myself.

My Dad was a great man and I loved him bunches, I sorta wish he had been 100% A**hole. But one thing is for sure, the time you spend riding with him will be some of the best of your life!

Outstanding!  You must be a proud papa.

About the CG Academy, my youngest had a chance to go there, but chose Air Force instead.  He graduated last year and is in pilot training now.  All of the service academies offer a first rate education (best in the world IMO) and a great start in life.  If he has any questions about how to get in, don't hesitate to contact me.

I was 44 years old when I got my first Harley, I can't imagine how cool it would have been to get one at 15.   :orange:
