Screamin' Eagle 120R Crate Engine
« on: October 31, 2010, 01:18:24 PM »

I haven't posted for over a year & traded my '07 SERK for a '10 FLHX just over a year ago.  Wanted tunes & just love this ride except the lack of power.  Just heard about the new crate engine that the Motor Company came out with recently & am seriously considering doing an upgrade next spring.  Anyone buy one yet or is it still too new of an offering?  Got a quote yesterday from my dealer & it's not a cheap undertaking but my last CVO bike cost $10-g more than a regular one & I don't really care about all the chrome goodies.  What gets me is the potential of doubling the hp & the huge jump in torque.  That's got to be some ride.  Checkout this link on You Tube if you haven't already where the presenter states, "it's the cure for the common bike."

Are you able to buy this?  I know they were warning that it wasn't for sale for street application (racers only) but wasn't sure how they could even enforce that.

Anyone can buy one, or any of the pieces to build one right out of the book. They have recieved a lot of press on other sites.

I first saw the engine in the latest HOG magazine & called my dealer the next day.  It's about a $10,000 investment w/all the other goodies i.e, pipe, breather, Pro Tuner, better clutch, oil cooler, labor, dyno time, etc.  Can you imagine doubling the horsepower plus at least a 50% bump in torque?  I like the fact that it's a Harley built engine at their Pilgrim plant in Milwaukee.  They say it's only available for racing but that's not accurate as any dealer will sell it if you give them $.  I'd like to hear an opinion of how streetable it is but it's still fairly new.

I understand they had a recall and are now just sending them out or will be shortly.

They don't have a download available?  Every motor has to be custom tuned?   :nixweiss:

Regarding whether there's a download available, good question but I don't know yet.  My dealer hasn't done one yet but put a quote together immediately inclusive of 4-hrs of dyno time.  Actually, it was a Super Tuner, not a Pro Tuner.  I'd just like to know that this is the right way to go for a bike that will be street ridden only, a long trip from time to time w/an occasional few runs at the drag strip once in awhile.

The 266 cam, that they come with, ain't no bagger cam, even if the compression is brought up another point to support it correctly.
BUT, a Wood 408 is a shoe-in at the "advertised" compression, and will slide under the springs as well.
NOW we are talking about a bagger-type power curve.
THAT, combined with a couple other mods, to enhance air flow/cylinder fill, and it should straighten those out.

Tire shredding time! That is the Electric Motor cam as far as I'm concerned. Have it in my bike

For that kind of money a good engine builder could put together a package having better reliability and would actually produce the figures HD advertises.

My personal experience with the build on my 2008 110ci... HD should not even be allowed to assemble Big Wheels.  Cheap, imported, poor quality parts and overall disregard for precision.

The first thing any racing team would do with that motor is to pull it completely apart and rebuild it using known quality parts and acceptable engine tolerances.  Can you imagine if HD came along and said the crank on that beast is allowed to have crank run out of  0.012”?!?

Just my opinion guys.  Don’t get me wrong I like my Harley but you have to admit they really let the public down on their declining quality and workmanship.   When you put lipstick on a pig it’s still just a pig.

That's exactly what I did.  I still have a 110, but putting out simular numbers to the 120R but for half the $!!!

That's the kind of feedback I was looking for as if I can do something performance comparable, w/better reliability & for less $, that's where I'm headed.  The thing is finding the right source who really knows their stuff & has a proven track record w/many satisfied customers on the street.  I live in the suburbs of Chicago & we have many dealers in the area but many are just bolt on parts experts.  I'm really looking to improve the performance of my bike engine-wise plus suspension-wise as in my opinion, it rides very rough.  Thanks for the comments.

I don't think I'd use a HD dealer shop unless you really have a good relationship with them and know the mechanics.  Not that they're bad or anything, I just don't think many have a reputation of building performance engines.  A dealership would have no problem throwing a crank back into an engine with 0.010” run out because the book says it’s OK.

Depending on your mechanical abilities do the work yourself sending out the machining portions of the build to qualified shops or the whole engine for that matter.  I see your in the Chicago suburbs… bring your cycle to one of the top crank and engine builders in the nation here in Wisconsin (Hoban Bros./Darkhorse).
