My build plan
« on: November 01, 2010, 05:16:17 AM »

Well i've gone and done it, ordered some gear to wake up my 09 springer. I ride mostly 2 up with the better half, and want a bit more go. the engine is currently stock and has only 1000 miles on it, this is whats planned & ordered so far:

1. Deweys Pro Street heads
2. Fueling "Reaper" 574 cam
3. Smith Bros adj push rods
4. Bassani Pro Street (turn out ) pipes
5. Planning for CR of 10.1:1 (keep in mind our fuel here "down under" is not quite as good as in the US)
6. Cometic 0.030" head gasket

Should i be concerned with upgrading other parts such as  cam bearing, lifters, clutch, other?  Any advice warmly welcomed, I must thank Don @ Deweys for his expert opinion to date, but I dont want to hassle him to much more, so I thought i'd put it out to the brains trust, Dave

Since you are changing out the cams I would change

1 cam bearings
2 Woods directional lifters

If you were to do something with the clutch it would be a AIM VPC, but since you ride 2 up mostly you probably don't get on it that hard

We change the bearings here upon new installs, and as already said, a VPC 92T, or a least a Barnett clutch spring.
Most of the time, when we are building those, that are destined for big power, we use both the VPC, and the spring.

So whats the go with the stock lifters? Are they that bad they need to be replaced, or is it the case that I have the opportunity so I may as well? :-\

Speaking of clutches. I can say the Bandit CVO clutch i installed has pulled 153 pounds of torque to date on my build with no slipping. So there are clutches available. On the lifters that's a darn good question as lifter failures are all to common. IT seems to be (hope i got a good set) I'm running the S&S with travel limiters and no problems so far but then again i don't have that many miles on them...4,000. I fortunately have not have had one go bad however the big lift cam guys have these issues not to mention cam bearing problems all the time! Build your engine very carefully...winning the dyno shootout-out has very little to do with a rideable bike. You probably already know this if so disregard and have fun!

Bandit Machine Works(John Magee) is what helped us being able to harness the power of our 108" AHDRA Mod Class racer, back in the day. 167 hp/142 ft/lbs.
VERY good product with light lever pull, usually. :)

The bandit clutch sounds like quality gear, I was using there strap and clamps on fire hoses when I served in the Navy - its was good quality gear. sounds like they are still at it , though not sure how they go from metal straps to clutches???

If i am to make 120 Ft/lbs in this build, is the addition of the SE clutch spring alone in sufficient? :-\

Seems like the cam bearing is a given, so i'll add that to the list.

The Bassani pipes & Reaper cam arraived safely yesterday, not impressed with Bassani's effort in packaging. All components had been wrapped ok (albeit minimal) and secured to box with zip ties, but with international transport things get a little rough i'm sure, so some of the zip ties busted. Luckily no damage done that I have seen so far.

Interesting build.  Sounds like you've been bending Don's ear too.  He's a great guy with sound advice.

Ours are almost identical builds as I'm running the Dewey Pro Street porting and a D&D Fatcat.  He's shipping my heads and arms back today.  I'll have mine finished by next weekend, Nov. 12th, hopefully.  I'm hoping to push the 120 envelope in HP and torque.

If your going through all that work, you may as well get rid of the slop from the cam chains and switch to gear drive cams if your crank run out is ok.

It's your bike and your money and you are entitled to do whatever makes you happy
BUT
Since you asked and only because you asked and not because I'm an effin know it all
I would call Dave Mackie and follow his advice and use whatever parts he recommended.
You may have noticed in Hubbard's post about the one time ole Maudie took 2nd place. It was basically a Mackie motor that beat him
Google DME  Dave Mackie Engineering. If you call you can get Dave on the phone and he will spend time with you and not try to get you off the phone in 30 seconds. Success has not gone to his head
Mackie does like Bassani by the way

Hey Harry, how ya been. I guess I've taken too many meds in the years since we last talked shop about buildin fast bikes. Thanks for clarifying for me. Cycle Rama should get credit where credit is due. I'm still a Mackie fan as Bubba_T did a build with all Mackie parts on his 03 SERK and it's a runner. Hope all is well with you and your lovely wife.
