Retro Radio 08 to 04
« on: November 05, 2010, 01:54:28 PM »

Putting an HK Radio I bought off an 08 into my 04 blue/black...I have read and re-read all  the post..Thanks Twolanerider!!   The install should be straight forward, but worried about the software upgrade..I have the Harness overlay..raio..etc..I have a buddy at the harley shop here in town if I need to have a software upgrade, but is it something that all the mechanics can do? I just want the radio, cd, and xm to work....dont need nav, intercom, etc....

If the radio was working in the original bike it will work in your bike.  Only thing that won't work is the automatic volume control that moves volume up and down relative to the bike's speed on the road.  Even that can be regained but you'll have have to snip and move a few wires.  Honestly not sure how much it's worth the even small hassle.

Only other thing to make sure of in the install is that you use the correct speaker wires.  Your SEEG will have two harnesses off the back of the radio.  You'll only use one of the two.  One is an overlay for a built in amp in the bike's stock radio.  It has its own speaker outputs.  That harness won't be used at all so its speaker wires will be dead.

The "original" speaker wires from are up by each speaker also.  Currently unused.  Find them and plug them in to the speakers.

Well, need to make a couple comments, Don, how long did the HK radio last in your bike after you did the install??  I know mine didn't make it through the summer.  The vertical support brackets are not strong enough and any excess vibration will cause the output to the external speakers to quit.  If you have broken brackets or heavier speakers in the batwing, both will shorten your radio life.

I can suggest a couple things.  I'll send a pm.

VRODDAVE has done the HK install in his '04 B&B with XM, CB and NAV.  See his post #7 in this thread:

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=42830.msg792891#msg792891

As for software, give Tony at Iron Cross Audio a call/email and ask him which he recommends.  I spoke to him a year or so ago about software and he was recommending version 8.19 even though two newer versions had been introduced at the time.  He probably knows more about HK radios and their software than anyone you're likely to be able to contact at MOCO or elsewhere.

Also, when you install the HK, confirm that the radio doesn't touch the bolts in the handlebar bushings.  HD recently issued a service bulletin identifying identifying that as a significant cause of HK failures and offers replacement (shorter head) bolts.  Might be a good idea to replace the bolts as a preventive measure.  I posted a link to the service bulletin within the past month or so.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

Darty, if at sometime you choose to sell the original radio and consider selling the amplifier's harness to complete the package it is something you can do.  That second harness you'll no longer be using is a self contained piece.

It connects at the fuse and the radio and the speakers.  Not even wrapped in the main harness.  So you can remove it to complete the radio package without losing or changing anything on the bike.
