mounting GPS on Convertible?
« on: November 07, 2010, 01:10:04 AM »

I have a Zumo 550 GPS from another bike and am toying around with the idea of mounting it some how onto the detachable fairing?  I am thinking I would only use the GPS when the fairing is installed.  There is already a wire located in the fairing for the IPOD and the speakers are right there also.  Anyone have any idea how I could power the Zumo and get the sound into the speakers?  I would think there is enough room around the area where the Ipod fits, to mount the GPS.

Hi Rick,

I'm going to use the Road Tech™ zūmo 660 and 665 Handlebar Mount Kit

Sat Nav is a Tomtom Urban Rider as the battery lasts up to 8 hours I am not going to wire it in.

That's the one I'm also using.  It looks good.  I'll post a picture later so you can see it on the bike.

The convertible has 1 1/4" bars on it, but the grips are mounted on the ends which are 1".  In other words, the bars have a 1" tube welded inside the 1 1/4" handle bar tube. You might want to pull of your grip and see if yours is the same. If it is, it'll fit.  If your bars are 1 1/4" the whole length then let me know.  I have another mount that I would be willing to sell you.

The mount I have and not using is a 92378-09 and is for a Zumo 660. See picture.  If you can use it, PM me.

Great thread timing.  Exactly what I was contemplating adding to my bike.

Aside from mounting options, does anybody have ideas and/or details on how to power the GPS Navigator?  Using the connection for the IPOD with some sort of splitter or adapter for the GPS would be nice.

Thanks :)

Hi, I have one more question on that topic, did anybody route the power cord of GPS inside of the handlebar, does anybody know if it is possible?

I suppose you could, but it's very tight inside those handle bars.  You need to drill and exit hole in the bar near the mount. I just ran mine on the outside.  You don't really notice it.  I ran it under the gas tank and under the handle bar riser, then up along the handle bar underneath.  I tie wrapped it where it goes up to the GPS.

Thank you, now I am really convinced to buy a couple of spare batteries, much better than to drill handlebar: less work, no wire and cool look!

Just had my 660 Garmin fitted to my 2011 Convertible using the chrome arm. It worked though the dealer had to grind down part of the internals of the arm so as to be able to install it on the standard 2011 bars. But it worked and the dealer did a great job.

I don't use my GPS that often, so I wanted some sort of mount that was easy to remove and left behind as little hardware as possible.  I found this mount from Techmount.  It is made for the one and a quarter inch handle bars of the 2011 convertible.  I need no special tools to remove my Garmin Zumo 550.  I just used the motorcyle handle bar mount that came with the GPS.  I have a little pigtail that runs under the tank and connects the GPS directly to battery, with a inline fuse.  In 30 seconds I can have the GPS mounted or unmounted, and everything looks pretty clean when it is removed.

The handle bar number has been change by Harley from 76000022 to 76000191 and it has been taken off of the Convertible parts page.  Maybe because some adjustments need to be made to fit the handle bars.

Etudeguy, what's this Convertible parts page you refer to? Is there a parts catalogue dedicated to the CVO Softail Convertible?
