Help, too loud!
« on: November 07, 2010, 12:17:00 PM »

At about 1800 miles, I put V&H true dual (or dresser dual) head pipes, CFR slip ons, and a SEST on my FLHXSE/2.

I love it, but it is just slightly too loud for my neighborhood and when my wife rides with. I'd appreciate any advice and/or suggestions--with the reasoning behind it--on how to quiet it down one or two notches... Obviously, I don't want to start over and would like to consider the quick and less expensive fixes first.

Thanks.

Fullsac 1.75" cores in the stock mufflers would quiet it down a lot....sell the CFR's and you may have money left over. Just a thought.....

The CFR is beautiful and is one of the loudest slipon available.   Somewhere in this forum someone put baffles in them.

From experience, save your money, 1.75 fullsacs won't bring the sound down. The V&H duals are extremely loud no matter what mufflers you use. I ended up changing to the fullsac x-pipe,
much better sound.

Charley and Hondo,

So, I have the one of the loudest headpipes in combination with one of the loudest slip-ons?

I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
I do not know about the head pipe, but the CFR is a megaphone without a baffle. = LOUD,  I do not like loud.  I chose the BUB Boom Can with stock head pipe based on input from here.  Has a strange/cool look and is a little loud when opened up.

MOVE!

Better yet make the neighbors move...

I had a V&H Pro Pipe w/competition baffle on my Stage 3 Fatboy that one of my neighbors hated... she ended up moving to Texas. ..

Oh well. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

If you still have them, put the stock slip on back on the head pipe and see what it sounds like.  I know the stock head pipe and stock slip on is what my wife likes. She does not understand!

X2..  I have a decatted head pipe with the stock mufflers/baffles and the sound is just right for me.  These mufflers get slightly louder as you put miles on them.  I also removed the end caps and cut exactly 1" off the end of the pipe baffle (what you see when you look from the rear of the bike).
This changed the sound slightly louder plus you don't have to look at the ugly pipe end because it is further up the end caps.

I am in the minority here but that is what works for me.  Tried the 1.75" baffles and were too loud on my 110 but just right on my wifes's 96"..  FWIW..

I aggree with harley charley, try your stock mufflers with the V&H headpipes, wont cost you anymore $, just some labor time and if you like the sound the stock 011 mufflers look great to!!

Johnny Rock - I have two questions.

1. with your set up any issues listening to music when cruising?

2. if you decide to sell your CFR's let me know...  ;D, I was looking at the Fullsac X pipes and the CFR mufflers.

I only have one neighbor that I like and he understand the bike... and the mrs rarely rides so louder is fine as long as I can hear the tunes.

Just so you know, 18 months ago I never thought I'd own a Harley with tunes or a windshield...

To me, with this set up, the tunes are fine when you're cruising--you just need to turn it up louder. It seems to be when you're getting up to speed that it's a little sketchy. This thing is loud. I think my dealer told me it's the loudest bike they've heard. It sets off a car alarm at 25-30 mph in my small town. I couldn't believe it when I picked it up with the mods from the dealer. It rattled the windows when he drove it out and around from the back of the shop.

I might be taking it to Lake Havasu AZ (coincidentally where Fullsac is located, I think) for a month or so this winter, so if I made a move on the CFRs, it definitely wouldn't be until after that.
