1 Qt of oil in 4000 mi OK?
« on: November 08, 2010, 10:11:40 AM »

Is this normal for a 110? I had the oil changed at 450 mi and added 1 qt at 4400 mi.

Is this normal or do I need to start checking the motor out. No leaks anywhere.

I think most of us would be happy at 1 qt in 4,000 miles.  I wouldn't worry at all if it were mine.  Will probably get better as the motor gets broke in.

One quart in four thousand miles on an air cooled Harley is excellent.  You can't compare this engine to the consumption on your automobile, for too many reasons to list here, so while you may never add oil between changes on your car or truck that isn't the norm for a Harley.  Be thankful that you don't have one of the bikes mentioned in other threads that use a quart or more in one thousand miles.

BTW, don't become complacent and neglect to check the oil on a regular basis just because consumption is relatively low right now.  Things can and often do change.

I change oil between 4 & 5,000 miles and it uses less than 1/2 qt.  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm taking the bike in for an fluids change so that I can put it up this coming weekend, so I'll ask the tech to check the primary level.

I heard somewhere on this board that it could leak into the primary somehow. Is this true? I really need to start tearing into one of these v twin so that I know more without asking what appears to be stupid questions.

Thanks for all your help.

I would be ecstatic with that!
First motor started with a quart every thousand. At twenty-nine thousand had dropped to five hundred to six hundred.
Second motor appears to be a quart every two thousand.

I feel fortunate....my 40,000 mile '08 CUSE goes between changes (4000 miles) with maybe 1/2 qt addition at the most.

Update, took my bike in for a check up/oil change and they found oil on one of the plugs. Going in for work now I'm looking at doing head work and cams.

My bike was blowing a quart every 1,000 miles and finally after several attempts the dealership finally listened====I had them change it and brought it back in a couple of days with 1,000 miles on it and had them check it again....I had my sister follow me and her clear riding glasses were coated with oil====they then determined that the valve guides/seals were bad====Had to replace the heads again.....

I don't have to add any oil between changes (4000) miles on my '08 CUSE which has 40,000+ miles on the odo.
