Tyres
« on: March 21, 2006, 07:05:06 PM »

As I mentioned elsewhere, I'd like to change the tyres (as we spell it in the UK!) on my CUSE when it arrives (shipped on 16/3, yipee!) for narrow whitewalls. but the dealership is quoting $620 to do that - and won't take the blackwalls as a trade in.

Jim,

There is one place I've actually done business with (Eastern Performance, Maryland), and another I've only heard of (Motorcycle Superstore, Oregon) that carry Metzeler's and ship internationally.

Thanks Jerry - I'll check them out.  The Metzelers I'd buy here, it would be the Dunlops I'd buy from teh US.

Jim,
I've never run Metzlers but know several people who swear by them.  It's my understanding that the tread life on the Metzlers is less because of a softer compound.

I did talk to a guy couple of weeks ago that had his Dunlops changed at delivery to Metzlers on his SEUC, he said he loved the Metzlers.  He also said he still had the Dunlops and needed to sell them.  I gave him one of my CVO business cards, and told him to join us and post the tires for sale on the site.  I've not seen him on here as yet but maybe he's lurking somewhere.  Maybe post something on the 'Wanted' board.

Jim,

I ran the Metz on my '04 Ultra, the bike handled great with them, and I'll probably change to em again when I wear out the Lops.  I just don't have enough of a problem with the Lops to justify changing them before they are worn out.  The one thing I really liked about the Metz, specifically the 140, is the sidewalls were stiff enough that if you let all the air out of the tire, you barely noticed it.  I'd recommend the Metz, but give the Lops a shot, they aren't as bad as folks make them sound.

I switched from Dunlops to Metzlers on my 03 Heritage Softail and found the handling to be head and shoulders above the Dunlops especially in the rain. I get the same mileage as I got on the Dunlops.

I see some posts about different tires aggravating the wobble factor.
I have to 2 comments
1. Did the dealer align the rear wheel properly?
2, If you have the wobble did you install the true-track or other after marked device? Did it help?

Lastly, I'm a firm believer in replacing the brake pads when you change tires. The pads are cheep and the installation cost is zero.

That's encouraging re the Metzelers, Dook.  I toured New Zealand a couple of years back, and all the locals there used Metzelers, though there were hardly any Glide owners. As I say, I have one on the rear of my Sporty, and it seems good.

The wobble is (for me an my friends) completely down to they tyre type, it seems.  Aligning the rear wheel - I do all of this myself, so it's not down to the dealer, but with the cam system on the glide, it's a no brainer - the alignment isn't going to change.  Scenario: you have the Dungslops pn and there's no wobble; you change the rear to say a Continental and there is a wobble, you change it next time to an Avon and there;s no wobble, you then change the front to an Avon too, and the bike handles so badly that it's unsafe!  All that tells me it's tyre choice, not alignment, that's the overriding factor with the wobble.  I see no point in the Ridestr8 or true-track from the point of view that there's no wobble with Dungslops. It's just that they are so awful in a cold, wet climate like ours!

Well, I've ordered a pair of the Dungflops from a seller on ebay - "Speedwaysales" in WI.   Price was good, at $97.95 for the front, and $117.95 for the rear, and shipping just $35.  Hopefully they'll get here before the bike arrives!

I'd have to wonder if there wasn't something wrong with your front Avon.
