Top End Noise
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:25:38 PM »

So I take my 2010 SEUC into the dealer for a 5K service.  Told him sounds like my valves are ready to disintegrate.  He tells me lots of 110's been have probs with this and the cure is to not use the SYN3 but 20w50 oil.  Says it has to do with the springs.

sounds like a line of BS to me.   Any comments

Last time I checked SYN3 was 20w50 oil. Find another dealer ASAP

X2 ---  All dealers are programmed to say they all sound like that, but I did not know they were programmed to say it "is the oil".

There's an old saying that goes "Ignorance is Bliss".  The typical Harley dealership seems to be filled with "blissful" people.

I'm going to assume that the moron you were talking to was trying to tell you to use the old fashioned Harley dino oil instead of the synthetic SYN3, both of which are rated as 20W50 btw.  Where he got that piece of wisdom is likely to be from some old wizened "expert" in the shop who still thinks synthetic oil is some sort of communist plot from the 1960's.

Find another dealership to do business with in the future.  Continuing to do business with people who really are that ignorant, or who tell you lies to avoid doing their job, is not something that will tend to make for a beneficial experience for you.

I'm getting similar noise until I ride for a couple miles - and I've used Amsoil 20w-50 syn oil for the last 20,000 of the 40,000 miles I've logged.  Taking mine in next week for a diagnosis.  Odd that it goes away after things heat up and expand....maybe a bad lifter?  We'll see.

Top-End Noise..... Hahaha!  Welcome to my world.  Bought my 08 SEUC in July of 07.  I now know that the top-end noise is "NORMAL"... because the dealer told me so.

I bought the extended warranty and I'm going to run it 'til it blows.

So I pick up my bike from the shop today......asked if they checked out the top end noise...."we listened to it, we did not tear it down to look"We recommend putting in the 20w50.  This spring. "  I asked why wait until spring.  I ride the bike all year round.     Blank stare.....told him I expect that to be taken care of on my next oil change.   If the oil as you say does not take care of the noise, then I would expect you to elevate this to MOCO......

On another note, when my bike has been ridden for a long time,   6 hrs,  I get a 2 to 3 second delay on my throttle.  He tried to tell me because I put after market slip-ons my bike is running a little lean and that I should purchase a SERT......(this is my 3rd harley and I still have 2 of them).

They could not find any codes......so the problem is because I put after market Pipes on..........Definetly looking for a new dealer.   Does anyone know if the sevice warranty is transferrable to a different shop?

Wise to look for another dealer.  Your warranty is good at any dealership.  The Extended Service Plan is good at any dealership and authorized independent shops also...

With extended warranty (vs initial new bike warranty), I believe you have to contact the warranty administrator before you can have extended warranty work done at a location other than the dealership where you purchased the extended warranty.

BTW, the 20w-50 oil comment is total BS....unless you are running 10w!!

Yep they all do it.

S&S lifters and adj push rods cured the top end noise on mine . Changed them out when the engine had 800 miles on it.
A lot of topend noise is caused by the valve seats not being concentric with the valves . They touch the seat then slide a little sideway`s making the clatter. Blue printing cures it.

How much did it cost you to do that???  I am not mechanically inclined would have to have it done.
