Hydraulic Clutch Leak
« on: May 10, 2004, 02:33:30 PM »

Well I now have over 1300 miles on the bike and I discovered my first leak.  The bleeder valve on the hydraulic clutch cover is leaking.

Mine does that too...there's a constant mist of oil over the cover.  I just figured that it was normal...

Mine does the same thing. Cover always has a film of fluid on it. It is coming from the screw hole.

h2o, mine did the same thing when it was new.  Took re-tightening it twice to stop it.  Clean the bleeder area well with some spray brake cleaner after you're done.  Otherwise, there can be some fluid left on the exposed threads that will run down the side of the cover over time and cause you to think it's still leaking.  You're correct in saying it's not normal for it to be leaking due to the design of the mating surfaces as you described.

This is my second bike with a hydralic clutch installed one on the Road King and have never had either one leak,  I would try changing the bleeder valve (may have small nich in it?) LOL  [smiley=biker.gif]

2500 miles, no leaks.  Now I am going to go out to the garage and look, if it is leaking I am going to be upset.  Stuff happens.

 [smiley=nervous.gif]  Brought her home last night.  4 mi on the odometer as I pulled out...  At 10 mi, my left glove fingers were wet.  Seemed to be running down the lever from the res.  Got home and tightened the cap screws... seems to have stopped.  At 40 miles still dry.  Hope it stays that way.  Is it possible your cap screws are loose?

If I'm talking about the same thing, it is the cover down by the engine, where the hydraulic hose terminates.  Yes?

After about my first 500 miles I had that mist al over the tranny cover, wiped it clean and has not reoccurred yet (900 mile total) and I have been checking it ever since. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]

Doc, actually it was on the handlebar that was leaking... I'm hoping tightening the cap was the end of it!

I have not had this problem on two bikes with Hyd. clutches. However I have had this problem on BRAKE bleeders after getting the calipers chromed. Did as others described;

Took out the bleeder, cleaned everything to make sure there was no foriegn matter and retightened. On one bike that's all it took. On the other, I did this three times before it finally stopped.

I think it may have something to do with the chrome interfering with a good tight fit and taking it on / off and retightening eventually gets all parts seated and sealed properly.
