Fast, short ride, and gas
« on: November 17, 2010, 04:52:06 PM »

This really isn't an exciting post, and the distance was marginal.

I picked up my 2000 SE Triple Red from my buddies shop, Custom Motorcycle Creations, at the Bagnel Dam Strip in Lake Ozark last nite.  Gassed up to the top, and hit the throttle.  I averaged about 80 mph for the 130 mile trip, in 40 degree weather.  By the time I was pulling in the driveway, the gas reserve light popped on.

Short ride, but fast.  It does look like mileage was only about 25- 30 at best.  This seems low, but maybe ok based on the speed?

I'll bet your mileage will turn out to be in the mid 30's, about right for those speeds.

If yours is an experience that's common to what I've always experienced there's no real worries there Gary.  Fuel usage will vary significantly with headwinds versus no wind and with speed.  Mine will vary from 35pgm or so at around 75 to 32mpg at around 80 to 45mpg if I'm on the two lanes running 65.  On the highway at 70 pulling the trailer it'll do about 35mpg tank after tank tank.

One trip coming down from Rockies then across western Kansas was especially ugly (or fun, depending on how warped you are).  Bad western Kansas winds.  Dust up so much visibility was 1/4 or a bit more.  Had it been a cross wind might have been unrideable.  But it was right on the nose.  Little Bushtec trailer in tow.  Three tank fulls in a row were 20-22 mpg.  Poor little bike was buzzing down the road going "I think I can I think I can I think I can...."

Your on track for the speed, my 06 does great till I get it over 75 then it drops dramatically.  My V ROD can suck its little tank dry at 100 miles if you run it hard
