DO the older SE Radios still have resale value?
« on: November 20, 2010, 12:06:57 PM »

Anyone have an idea what the original radio that came in my 2004 FLHTCSE is worth? Its the 60watt 2 channel  AM/FM/CD/WB radio.   This might be the correct part number 76202-04   but not for sure ..

Just trying to get an idea if it still has value, and what value that might be.

Thanks

If it is a Radio Sound, radio, the exchange price from Radio Sound for a rebuilt unit is about $ 200.00.  so that might help you to put a value to your radio.

Obviously, it's a far better component than what was in the Shovelhead and Evo baggers. It might actually be a plug and play for a 93 (?) and up Evo with Deutsch connectors. (Can't remember what year they switch the connectors )The thing is however you can go to your local Best Buy and pick up a Sony single CD car stereo head unit for $100 that will fit in the fairing of these older H-D's. I rode a 98 EGC all summer that had a Sony unit in it and the sound was/is superior to anything H-D has offered even today.  Bottom line I guess is that if somebody really felt they wanted an orginal H-D branded head unit they might pay $50 for it. Not sure how much experience you've got or how many H-D's you've owned so please don't take offense at this. One of the things you learn very quickly when buying and modifying H-D's is that the take-offs aren't usually worth much if anything. There's thousands and thousands of stock parts sitting around in people's garages from changes they made to their stock bikes. Theoretically this was one of the reasons H-D Inc began to offer CVO models - - they come with everything you could ever want. But we're all a bunch of Harley-Davidson nut jobs and enough is never enough. It's always Bigger, Better, Faster , More around here.

That's just my opinion of course and as is always the case on this site, open to debate

B, I have a good friend that rides an 87 ultra that gave up on his factory unit. Would the Sony work for him or is 87 to old?

Any head unit made for a car should work Terry. He might have to use a roto-zip or dremel to open up the hole in the fairing a bit. It ain't rocket science and I'm sure if he's at all handy he can make the swap. The thing is though, the unit in this post would be a good deal for him depending on price because he wouldn't have to do anything other than deal with the wires. He'd only need to remove the Deutsch connector on the H-D unit and either redo it or cut the plug on his bike and just hard wire the whole thing. If I were him, I'd offer the member selling this unit $50 plus shipping.

I was considering selling the old radio that came out of my 04 FLHTCSE.   I hung onto it just incase i had to backout of the advanced radio upgrade.  But i think I'm pretty committed to the advanced now.   Just didn't have any idea what value it had.

in response to BESERKER, not offended in the slightest. I come here for straight honest answers and i much appreciate them.    :2vrolijk_21:

I think that happens to be a very good reliable unit.  Of course HD switched and went to the HK radios because they cost them less.  I'm sure anyone with a 98-05 would love to have that radio. Good luck of you plan on selling it.  That radio is in the parts catalogue for over $1000.  Just sayin'.

I think your orginal plan is best. If I were you, I'd hang onto it and put it back in the bike if/when you sell it so you can use the upgraded one on your next bike. (if it fits that is) If you're anything like the rest of us and you're riding a seven year old bike, it ain't gonna be long before that gottahaveanewbike bug bites you.

I was planning on taking the advise to just keep the old radiio,  but from this thread received a few contacts from interested parties who wanted the radio.   Just thought i would close out the thread answering the original question with what i learned for the benifit of others contemplating same question.

1) DO the older SE Radios still have resale value?      :nixweiss:

YES!  i received several pings on the radio following this post.

2) What is the resale value of this model ?    :nixweiss:

In my case, based on what other members shared with me,  i accpeted offer of $300 plus shipping.
More than some thought, less than others.   Middle of the road.

Thanks for all the tips and advise.   :2vrolijk_21:

Dave, you may recall I did some research on that radio with HD back in late 04 or early 05 (have to do a search on here).  That radio was/is from Radio Sound and I believe it was only that year......if my memory serves me correct (we all know we can't count on that) the head unit changed for the 05 SEEG.

Also, the Ultra Classic (CVO and standard) both had a different stereo.  The SEEG stereo has an internal amplifier where the Ultra Classics had an external amplifier.

Jim (hd-dude) will know, he's changed out and worked on a number of them over the past five years. :2vrolijk_21:

The 04-05 radios were different from the radios in all the other bikes. Built in amplifier that the "stock" radios did not have.

The radio by itself will not work in another bike except with low power outputs.  You also need the accessory harness that is part of that radio package.  It's a standalone harness in the bike and can be removed without cutting any wire.  But it goes directly from the fuse panel at one end to the radio at the other.  So to remove this harness you'll have to pull the tank and open the locks on one bank of the fuse panel to remove that terminal.

Twolane,  thanks for the tip.   I think it went back into a screaming eagle with the same radio and harness ...  I think the new owner is good to go ....

Thanks

Good sale, guess I need to bone up a bit on some of this stuff.

I did want to mention that on my 07, I had to have the H-D dealer "flash" the radio in order to run rear speaker pods on the tour-pak. What that means is the unit needs to be programmed to run the rear speakers. It will not power them up if this isn't done. Was that the case with the radio this thread is about as well ? I ask because didn't H-D basically go to the same radio that is being discussed here as the stock production model (non CVO) in 06 and beyond ?
