Headlight Adjustment - Baffled the H-D mechanic
« on: November 23, 2010, 06:57:51 PM »

Okay, here's a tough one for all the CVO techies out there.

Just purchased the 2006 CUSE and on the way home the headlight was extremely low. At 25' from the garage door the center of the beam was about 4" up from the bottom of the door, should be 36", simple adjust right? Not so easy  :confused5: after several tries the best I could do was about 30" with the top adj screw bottomed. Why can't I adjust this up anymore? I added standoff screws to the bottom of the assy that screws to the fairing and I was able to get it within specs but it is "Mickey Mouse". Any one have this problem? Sorry no pics at this time not on the home 'puter..... :nixweiss:

do you have a the dual halogen head light? many have had to cut down the top spring to be able to adjust the light high enough

Good point Chains, it was tight in the back of the lens but didn't check the bulb itself ???

Unless something is just loose or misassembled go with Neal's suggestion above.  It's not been an uncommon thing with that light assembly that the spring tensioning the top adjuster has to be shortened.  Not a big chore.  Back the screw out.  The spring is hard so you'll not cut it with cutters.  Instead grind it down on a bench grinder.  Reassemble and adjust to taste.

I needed to do this to properly aim my headlight...   :2vrolijk_21:

Been telling the "good lookin one" I really do need a bench grinder  ;D

I actually did entertain the idea of doin that but figgered there must be sumthin wrong cuz nobody would ride with the light that way for almost 42000 miles  :confused5:

I will try it, Thanks...

Take it off a couple rings at a time.  But don't be surprised if the first attempt isn't enough.  On my own bike the spring ended up half it's original length to get the light where it needed to be

NW Glider, Both times I bought new Harleys (95 FLSTN and 09SEUC) the headlights were pointing down and needed to be adjusted. Same with my friends 06 Dyna wide glide. I made a mark on garage floor and put tape on the inside of the garage door and easily adjusted them. What irritates me is that I asked  my salesman if the headlight was adjusted when I picked my bike up and of course he said that all that stuff is checked prior to delivery. Just another reason get the service manual and do as much as you can yourself. Good Luck CAHDBIKER

But yours was only necessary when you switched to the Xenon bulb from what I recall you saying back when I put in my Xenon.  It doesn't seem that this should be necessary with the stock headlamp bulb.  Just an inquisitive thought and I get a "Get out of Jail Free Card" in case I'm way off on what I said, since this is my 3000th post. :nixweiss:

Every one I've put a HID light in needed the spring shortened.  Mine needed the spring shortened just a ring or two when I installed the dual bulb housing.  It needed almost half the spring removed when I later put the HID bulbs in that housing.  Can remember at least a couple others mentioning too limited adjustment travel with the dual bulb housing even when not using HID bulbs.

I'm jonesing for Turkey......

Okay,

One more question b4 I disect the spring. :-\

What about the lefty and righty adj screw springs? looks like I am gonna have a hell of a time gettin the "beauty ring" (headlamp door) back on without pushing down (compressing) the L & R adj's to get the little screw in the bottom of the ring. Or - do I leave the clip out of the top notch. Here is a part book diagram of the assy,

http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/ronnies//hdm_oem/hdmc.asp?Type=18&A=392&B=40&Action=O

I have assy #24 with 21,17 and 18 and strangely enuf I have part #36 which it shows for International only ???

Never had to screw (pardon the pun) with the side adjuster other than normal adjustment.  Outer trim ring comes on and off ok even with a significantly shortened top adjusting spring.  Time to stop thinking and start screwing shortening.
