Touring Oil Vent Line -- Oil Leak -- Cheap Fix
« on: November 24, 2010, 10:30:01 PM »

For anyone feeling cheap and having an oil leak this might help someday.  Pictured below is the rubber seal that is inside the compression nut on the engine block end of the oil vent tube.  Other end has a brass ferrule and nut so will probably never leak.

Over the years this line has been on and off the bike a few times.  The rubber seal probably isn't up to that much remodeling.  So started getting a weep.

Had a day with nothing to do so farted with the bike.  Found the weep was bad enough to be messy.  Harley doesn't sell the rubber seal by itself.  Only with the brass fitting that goes in the engine and the brass compression nut.  So you end up paying $20 for a little one dollar rubber seal.  Thank you Harley Davidson.

Since local shop didn't have and the idea of paying $20 for the little rubber seal annoyed me looked for Plan B at the hardware store.  Less than fifty cents for a 3/8" Delrin sleeve.  Put an o-ring behind it better mate the inside of the nut to the sleeve.

Tapered end of the sleeve fits nicely inside the fitting in the engine.  Compression from tightening the nut seems to have sealed it up ok.  Used the o-ring behind the sleeve to better mate the nut to the hard sleeve.  Little 20 mile ride this evening between rain showers and so far so good.  At least no oil weep right now.

Twolanerider, Nice fix. I also try to improvise when I think HD is overcharging for something I think I can make up myself or buy cheaper at a hardware store. Just wanted to pass on a company I stumbled onto which could help out regarding rubber seals/plugs etc. Their website is midatlanticrubber.com 800-536-1620. They might come in handy for someone on the site. Ride Safe CAHDBIKER

Thanks very much.  Hadn't run in to them before.  That company might be the best source I've seen for those many kinds of product all in one place.  Excellent source.  Really appreciate you tossing it out here.
