Tour Pak Is Here- Need some help.
« on: November 25, 2010, 07:40:55 AM »

My tour pack FINALLY came in after 10 weeks.

I got the new mounts installed, removable rack ready etc etc. I noticed there are no holes in the bottom of the tour pack. I assume I have to drill those?

Does anyone know which holes to drill and what size and type of bit to use?

Nothing in the paperwork that came with the pack addresses this.

Thank you much.

Do you have the P/N of the rack you have? That may help getting the right template to create/drill the holes.

Why not use the rack itself as the template?  It is the part the bolt holes have to line up with...

That would work to... but wouldn't the template line the holes up front/back and left/right.. in otherwords center it or place the holes in the proper location on the TP? Your method would make sure the holes on the rack would line up w/the holes drilled in the TP but would they be in the proper (balanced if it would make a difference) place. :nixweiss:

Using the detachable rack and the metal plate on the inside it is pretty self explanatory. Use a drill bit just a tad larger than the bolts themselves.

I've drilled a couple of tour paks to match the holes in the tour pak to the detachable rack.  Used painter's tape on the bottom of the tour pak; found and marked the centerline of the tour pak on the tape with a Sharpie; found marked centerline of the rack; matched the centerlines of the tour pak and rack; established fore/aft location of the rack on the tour pak; then used a high speed drill bit to drill the tour pak bottom; cleared the drill bit of the tour pak material; and, then drilled the metal plate.

The tour paks I drilled had holes already and the drilling was necessary because, in one case the tour pak was for an '08 bike and was being mounted on an '09 bike (the '09 rack has different hole dimensions than '08 and older tour paks), and the other tour pak was being mounted on an older version of the Milwaukee Bagger detachable rack that had non-HD hole locations.

Surprised that you can buy a HD tour pak, color-matched, that doesn't have the correct holes (or any holes according to the original post) for mounting on an HD detachable rack since the tour paks are listed by color and model year with the latter being included to provide the correct hole locations; e.g. there are multiple listings of tour paks in vivid black based on model year.  If you received a new tour pak from HD with no holes, perhaps it's a production mistake.

I just received my Tour Pak a couple weeks ago and all the holes were pre-drilled for the 2 ways to mount the bracket (rearward/forward) and the backrest. The metal plate on the inside of your Tour Pak has no holes in it? Meaning you must not only drill thru the fiberglass but the metal plate too? Odd.......

I would think it would depend on the rider/driver combo some need more room, if so slide it back. That much of a balance won't make any difference.
