Rapid acceleration shifting
« on: November 29, 2010, 09:54:45 PM »

Just curious about the appropriate method of shifting when rapidly accelerating. As an example, if peak torque is at 3500 RPM and max HP is at 5000 RPM, at what rpm would you shift gears to maximize acceleration/speed?  I was  hanging out at a place this past Sunday and as guys were pulling out, they were putting on a show so to speak.  Some shifted pretty quickly while others let the revs get up there. I guess this would be like doing the quarter mile.

Usually shifting so you are at the torque peak in the new gear gives the most acceleration.  If the torque isn't so much a peak as a plateau hanging onto the lower gear longer saves the tme for shifting more often.

Probably different bikes with different head work, ignition, cams, exhaust etc...... Each has its own power band, rev. limit, shift points. I think if you take your bike and run it out hard in each gear you can get a seat of the pants feel for when it stops pulling, Then shift! I once raced a guy who thought he had the badest bike on the road. After I smoked him he said well you were speed shifting? DA? That's what racing is but not everyone knows how to do it. Mine came from riding dirt bikes since I was a child and always pushing the envelope for the rush! My best advice is get on a back road alone and do a little practicing. You definitely don't want to show boat in front of a bunch of people and miss a gear or even worse bust it loose or hook it up and get away from you! Have fun and ease into it brother!  Face :bananarock:

What speed do you want to stop accelerating at depends on when you would shift to the next higher gear?

I normally shift out of first about 2300 and the rest of the way to a reasonable highway speed I shift between 2800 and 3000 for the smoothest shifts, kind of let it clear out.
It's a comfortable cruise rpm between 2500 to 3000.
I ride not race but I can keep up.

To each His own thing

Just as you feel the power start to level off, shift, then when you feel it start to level a second time, shift, same for third. Get the picture? How ever many revs it will go, USE THEM, as often as possible.
All this old man crap about torque peak, max hp - blah, blah, blah. Ever watch a small block chevy tach go past 9000 and smile just before you held the accelerator on the floor while stabbing the clutch to shift? Do the same to your bike at 5500, 6000, 6500 or whatever you can.
Just enjoy it, NO right or wrong here. I wind the piss out of mine, every day. Have a buddy who has never been over 4000 RPM because he is scared of damaging the motor, my opinion he does not deserve to ride, but he does.
