WOW, some hotels in Rapid City are already sold out.  Does not usually happen until May (ish).  Prices went crazy.  The room I had last year for $290 or so is over $400 just before the rally, to over $700 during the rally!!  With the Full Throttle show and last night the Buffalo Chip story on the Travel Channel, I think they are banking on a larger turn out for 2011, but dang they sure are spanking us hard.  Just my opinion.

So which hotel is gouging to $400/$700?

We stayed with a friend last year, one block from the bars. She paid ME, all I had to do is fix a little plumbing problem!!

try www.vrbo.com get a group and rent a 3 to 5 bedroom and the price is much more affordable

In 06 I stayed at the Holiday inn Rapid city one night before going to the chip. Were were there on Wed for $139. I made the reservation almost a year in advance. I asked if we could stay an extra day and they called back and said yes for $400! I told them I would be doing a late check out and off to the chip we went. Camping is the cheapest option and shipping your gear is a great way to go. My experience is all hotels double or better there rates during the rally. Best to make hotel reservation 11 months in advance. In 06 the traffic was so bad it took over an hour to get from the chip to the freeway at 8am! I swore I would not go back! Plan on sitting in traffic about 80% of your vacation. My best plan is to get there about Tuesday or Wed. before the rally and do your sight seeing. Enjoy the rally for 2 to 3 days then get fed up with lines and traffic so I head home!

Sturgis is a great idea for a Western GTG.  Unfortunately there is already a GTG out West for 2011 in Lake Tahoe so maybe the planning should be for a GTG in 2012 near Sturgis.

Who says you can only have one GTG a year at a particular geographical location? There are multiple GTG"s done all the time.. as long as the dates are different and don't conflict....

Create it and they will come.

This is a GREAT place to stay JUST outside of DEADWOOD.

STURGIS before or after is a GREAT idea.
