It Takes Off Pinstripes Too
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:17:48 PM »

I just got my replacement for the Bushtec that got destroyed last Summer. I love everything about this Turbo II except the pinstripes. I guess its a personal thing like tattoos and in this case they had to go. After doing some internet research it came down to scraping, heating, sanding, or using EZ Off oven cleaner. Some folks were shocked at the thought of using oven cleaner including a couple polymer scientist. The stuff would obviously destroy everything it touched including your skin, but the experts at the paint shops declared it was common practice to use this stuff. Sooo of course I had to try it  ???

Here is a pic of the pinstripes on the lid, but they were all over the trailer.

I sprayed some in the lid and dabbed a towel in it. I did think of wearing gloves  :P

Dabbed it all over the pinstripes, but was careful not to get it anywhere else.

According to the internet your suppost to leave it there for about ten minutes and then gently rub. ???  Dang if it didn't start to break up and come off.

After the stripes rubbed off, I cleaned it up with water and hit it with Glare Spyder and then polished it. It worked  :orange: the paint was fine, the clear coat was awsome and there was no way to tell it had ever been pinstriped. Not even a hint of paint fade or ghosting of the old image.

The polymer scientist could not figure out the active ingredient in EZ Off that makes it work, but think it may be the propellent. Another explanation was that todays automotive paints are resin based and the pinstripers use laquer cause it doen't run and dries fast so the oven cleaner only eats the laquer and leaves the resins, including the clear coat alone. There was a couple of pinstripes that were clear coated over and I couldn't get them off.
So if you go a bike show and  :drink:  too much and the next day discover pinstripes all over your bike that you don't remember getting and don't like em, this trick works.

Doc,

I have used oven cleaner extensively on boats cars and motorcycles that are lettered or pinstriped, works great but is tough on your skin.  Good Job

I'm stoked with the trailer and got a great deal on it from a bike collector in Florida. He said it was just sitting around and he never got around to using it. I haven't heard anything from the Harley dealer in Sandusky in about a week, but know the parts are out for paint. The vents I put in the lowers threw them off for a few days but it wasn't like I didn't warn them.  Doc
