You can't go wrong with him (hd-dude) doing work on your scooter. While you there I bet you get some lights also.

BTW - hd-dude doesn't know it yet, but when I hit the lottery I'm going to buy a big a$$ rig that he/we can tour all the major events and he can do his magic (service/lights/etc) and then at night we can go out and have fun. Ok, that's my dream, and I can make it as big as I want.

I wish I was I'd be all lit up and have lot's more bling. [smiley=nervous.gif] To top all that off I'd probably end up paying him for hanging out every weekend learning how to work on my scooter. Oh chit, then I'd be buying more tools and other stuff. Wow, maybe it's a good thing I'm all the way on the other coast.

Thanks for the welcome guys.  After only a couple of months after graduation to a big bike, I have a lot to learn.  First to do is learn how to search this site. Great info.

Do all my trading at Tilleys, but their allocation of SE's were sold out (way too many NASCAR boys around here).  Had to go to HD of Charlotte.  They actually had three to choose from and a couple more still to come in.

Purchase the K&N filter (K&N part number HD-0800

I did this, bought all the "Roll your own" items listed which was a nice cheap way to go!  

Couple of silly questions though:

1) My K&N doesn't look like the one in the pic below (with thanks to Steve G for the post of the original pic) at all!  Instead of having parallel sides, it's more conical in shape i.e. the outside diameter is smaller than the inside, but it seems it fit the backplate fine - am I using the correct filter?

2) It came with a self-adhesive rubber ring, which I stuck on the outside circumference of the filter, thinking that would be the best thing to do, avoiding metal on metal (i.e. the ham can against the filter) contact. Correct?

3) The bolt that fixes the cover to the filter - the big one in the centre - was VERY tight to go in - I double checked that I had it on the right thread twice, and the threads looked like about the same pitch, but again this had me wondering if I'm using the right filter element! Is it usually very tight like this?? I had visions of it winding a nice spiral of metal into the inside, but I wasn't going to take it off again to check!  

4) Silliest question of all - nowhere, not even in the supplementary workshop manual, does it say which way round the cover (FLHTCUSE) goes.  And it never occurred to me that it wasn't symmetrical!  I assume the shallow end goes to the back/deep end goes to the front, but can someone just confirm that?

I clean off the old loctite and use just a couple drops of the blue loctite when I reinstall.

Yes, I do that (and did that!) too - but it really was tight!

Yes, you have the correct filter, and yes, it's hard to get the bolt started.  I think you are good to go!  This "roll your own" advice is the only way to do it now that they've quit including the K&N with the SE AC package.

Try ordering up 29591-99 and adding it to the top of the filter......this'll move the cover away a bit more and allow you to "tighten" up the bolt instead of bottom it out......the cover will start moving after a while....mine did......but only with the K&N Filter, never moved with the SE Air Filter with the original kit.......that gasket you put on the filter isn't thick enough for our chrome cover.....this is just a thicker gasket that HD sells.

Good thinking FR8...I actually had that gasket put on mine when the dealer did the install, and it makes things fit better.

If I put these on at the house will the bike run well enough to go to the dealer ?

Normal riding for a while if the Tilley boys are backed up?

Or should I just take all the chit in a box and say "Here, fix this?" :-/

I am still a total Newbie to this EFI stuff.  Would have been rejetted and down the road by now in the old days.
