I removed mine the first day I had my bike. Allows more foot movement. I like the shifter farther out so I put a spacer in between, not the end cap.

Alright, I just pulled my 11 FLHX heel shifter down off the wall....

And YES, do not throw it away....   :2vrolijk_21:  It is the EXACT COPY of the front shifter, all you have to do it loosen the screw on the pad and turn it over and you have a new replacement...

When the front shifter shows a little wear, road weary, you have a built in Billet style MATCHING SPARE...

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!  (day early in Oz, past the International dateline)  GOD BLESS ONE AND ALL, AND PROTECT YOU WHEN YOU RIDE...

You can do it two ways.  One is to put the "spacer" behind the shifter, or the other way is to put a cover on the front of the shaft.  Harley makes a cover (35471-05) that covers the shaft if you move the shifter all the way back.  The spacer moves it outward, leaving you about 2 inches to play with.  There is no shaft exposed this way.  If you go with the spacer behind the shifter, it can be purchased through about any aftermarket dealer.  Kuryakyn, Drag, or Custom Chrome all have them.  While you're at it, change the allen bolt out for a chrome one.
RK2K,

Thanks for sharing the photo of the spacer. I have only seen the cover and hated it. I will be going this way.

I've been riding motorcycles for 25+ years and never had or needed a "heal shifter". Although, my big footed neighbor really likes his.

I think the idea came from some commuting executive who didn't like to get his fancy dress shoes marked up. Maybe Harley should just include some shoe polish instead. ;D

I had a total of 6 miles into my riding career when the heel shifter caused me to fall, break my ankle and go into a cast for 7 weeks.  That was the day after my wife told me she hated motorcycles.  Now she loves them - and - I ALWAYS REMOVE THE HEEL SHIFTER !!!!

What'd you do, DOOFUS?  Catch your pants cuff on the shifter or something like that?  :nixweiss: spyder

Here ls a link to the shifter I use.  Gives a lot of room on the foot boards.
