110 after 15.000 m
« on: December 21, 2010, 05:48:34 AM »

as my FLHTCUSE4 will run out of warranty next June I decides to have the engine thoroughly checked during this winter.

Result: everything in perfect order except a damaged SE compensator, a suspect colouring of the crank (which besides of that is within specs and does not show any wear) and a ever so tiny oil leak. Compensator and crank will be exchanged on warranty, labour fully covered.

the pics:

compliments to the Dresden dealer crew: perfect workmanship and good pick of tuning components (SE only) - a reliable, nicely running engine.

Will the dealer work with you on upgrading the crank/cases ?

Been following a thread on another site discussing the compensator. Another had the same wear marks as you. What oil are you using in the primary?
Also what year is your bike, thought the se compensators only came with the 2011's

the bike is produced end of 2008 but wasn't sold till mid 2009. Before delivery I had the freshly introduced SE compensator - and some other niceties - installed. The dealer is fully cooperating as is the MoCo subsidiary. We are just checking if we can upgrade to the SE crank instread of the regular '96 part. Oil is Syn 3 over all.

How did you get the dealer to look at this to begin with?  I'm shocked that they will do the crank.
Might have to fly out to Germany to get things fixed, that is fantastic service.

OK, more info please....  I am trying to develop confidence in my new 2011 110 SE...

Why the complete tear down?  Most people would not think about a tear down to the crank in less than 50,000-80,000.....

And why the compensator wear in only 15,000???  Do you shift and get down to 2000 rpm for the good Harley sound? (I am guilty a bit on that one) They seem to be happier shifting in the 2500-3500 and up to 4000 when you are getting on it a bit. I would not think you would have compensator problems unless you like the shovel head sound a bit at 2000 (like I do) around town sometimes...

I'm with Cowboy on this one. Other than total paranoia, why tear down a perfectly good machine without" some" idea that something may be wrong?

I am a little suspicious as my FLHRCI 103 had 3 engine breakdowns, the last of them out of warranty did cost me dearly  :nervous:

The little oil leak gave a perfect excuse to disassemble the whole engine on warranty, had to be done anyway.

And it's deep winter over here in the dark side of Germany now (plenty of snow and temperature around 10 F today), no riding for at least the next 6 weeks to come. So just to be shure we thought let's use the season  ;)

we ride around half of our riding time leading bigger groups, very carefully accelerating and decelarating. Usually rpm is between 1.500 and 2.500 then as we don't want to loose some older Evos and Shovels  ;)
