Not sure if this is the right place to post this topic, CVO's come from factory with synthetic oil in the engine, my understanding is that it is too slippery to seat the rings properly and a person should be using petroleum blend oils for the first 100 miles or so.  What oil has everyone used to break in their CVO's?  Synthetic or not?

I believe most of us have broke them in with the factory semi synthetic fill that came in them from the factory.

Isn't the Syn 3 fully synthetic now?  No matter I just break 'em in as per usual and never had any problem.  Never run anything but synthetic in my last three bikes (and four engines since the '07 was replaced at 22k).  Cars are coming with synthetic these days.  I just don't see the problem.

That's the propoganda that the MoCo and the dealerships used to spew before they switched to synthetic theirselves.  They'll tell you what ever they need to, to keep you buying HD!

Ran my 08 from new with factory Syn 3 thru breakin.....now have over 40,000 miles and don't add oil between changes yet.  I did switch from Syn3 to Amsoil Syn about 15K miles ago (purely economic decision).

Syn3 doesn't seem to be a problem for break in.  Don't try breaking in a motor on Redline, Amsoil or Mobile One, those are real Synthetics and chances are the rings will never seat properly as the oil is just way too good for breaking.

It's always a trade off for breakin.  For the rings your just want a decent dino oil, however for the cam you would like to have the best synthetic you can run.  See the dilemma here.

So, you run the best oil you can that gives you confidence that the rings will seat & the cam will not wear.  Roller lifters help this situation a lot.

My opinion, do an oil change at 500 miles, put syn3 back in & run to 1500 miles, then put a real synthetic in it.

Uhhhhhhhh....from the HD P&A catalog:  "Screamin' Eagle® SYN3® Full Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant - SAE 20W50".  Syn3 is a "real" synthetic oil, as are Redline, Amsoil or Mobil One V-Twin.  The only difference is the latter three are much better and will work just fine as a break in oil.  But if the bike comes from the factory with Syn3 why change it?  It'll only be in the bike for 1,000 miles and then it's replaced.

Chip, did you know that if you dip split tipped Iridium spark plugs in a synthetic oil that you can get laid with twins covered in baby oil .

That's good to know!  Another bit of knowledge obtained and put away for future consideration!.....

You have to be careful though Scott.  It can get kinky when the twins break out the curb feelers and tie rod repair kits from the same 50s to 70s service station racks that sold those era's hocum preceding the synthetic break in and Iridium thermal cooling stuff.  Baby oiled twins with curb feelers is just too much for an old guy like me anymore !
