Ive got between 5-6 years on mine and still working.

POST Modified:
you know what,  after rereading your original post,  i have to modify my response.

I do not have the digital dipstick.  I have the dipstick that is a digital thermometer.

That could be why mine has lasted so long.

Mine lasted two years. New battery wouldn't bring it back to life. Now have the gauge and don't have to burn my fingers checking the dipstick Jimmy.

Mine lasted until the first heavy rain. Dipstick leaked battery corroded. 4 months old out of 90 warranty (and it was the first rain we had that I rode in).

Yup,  I had one of those on my RK.  Push the button and get the temp readout.  Never had a battery problem,  but was very pissed to recall the "stock" dipstick had a "knurled" edge  which enabled you to remove it and replace it without dropping it.

Whereas the expensive Fu**ing digital one had a smoooooooooooooth chromed cap and one could extract it to add oil and then have it drop (due to lack of knurling around the cap) onto ones chromed exhaust pipe covers and creating a nice "ding".........Dont ask how I know that :(

One quick tip - learned the hard away.  Do NOT ever place the dip stick on the ground on it's face, with the dipstick facing up in the air. During an oil change, I set it down on the work bench, not thinking, and when I went to reinstall it, found the entire face filled with oil. Very bad move.

Probably the best approach is to save the money and spend it on something more useful like a chrome muffler bearing.

As far as checking the actual oil level is concerned, the standard dipstick you already paid for in the purchase of the bike does a fine job and doesn't require batteries.  It also doesn't give bogus readings as long as you wipe it and reinsert it before taking the reading; the electronic ones often give erroneous readings.  They also seem to have a fairly poor reliability record, just like the earlier temperature only versions.

If you want to check oil temperatures (can't imagine why, since you can't do anything about it), by far the best approach is the dash mounted gauge which allows for continuous and real time readings.  No batteries required either.

I only use one because it locks in. Bought it to replace the original that launched itself into the weeds
