Only a question.........I am curious!
« on: December 30, 2010, 10:15:50 AM »

I have been a member of this awesome site for a while and I have noticed that some people when post pictures of their bikes they hide or delete or erase their license plates numbers. But at the same time I have seen that people post pictures of their personalized license plates or regular numbers.......(I am one of them, nothing to hide)

So I ask if anyone could know the reason why the some people hide the license plate ID?

Anyway, I DON'T UNDERSTAND !! :confused5:

Years ago, when Harley theft was much higher than it is now, people would block out their license plate number so the low lifes that had connections in the various state's motor vehicle office couldn't locate the address where the bike was registered and go take it.

The above plus the address for a CVO/Screamin Eagle usually is not a late 50's/early 60's trailer park.
Me, I'm stuck in the late 70's dbl wide.
But it has a big deck overlooking the treatment plant!

This is still in wide practice on most of the TV shows devoted to Hot Rod cars and custom motorcycles.  JC you are dead on and it still happens more than we'd like to think, although in CA if you check a bit you'll find it's the metric bikes that are gettings stolen by the truckload. There was a piece on the local (San Diego) news the other night about how you can overide the bike's security system by plugging a "pigtail" into the lead for the diagnostic on the ECU. I am thinking the same would work for H-D's ? Not sure, just mentioning it. One more thing to worry about (hiding your diagnostic plug)

Is that what they refer to as a water front view? :)

Since 9-11 (even without the Patriot Act provisions) it has become "slightly" harder to locate someone using one of the many fee based locator services.  Having a plate number was easy to use -- and is still not foolproof.  I don't worry that much about it though -- here's why -- we have no privacy.  Period.  In my profession and past lives I've done a lot of work in the area of due diligence, investigations, privacy, etc.  There are some things you can do to make yourself "more protected" than most -- but there is no privacy anymore.  DOOFUS

I'll second that! Privacy is a commodity these days.  Like you I have years of digging into pasts ~  nothing is unreachable these days.

I originally posted pics of my bike with plates unaltered, but then thought about it and edited the pictures.  Even though guests can't see the attached pictures, doesn't hurt to keep personal info harder to acquire.

Having been in the tech industry for the last 22 years, been pretty careful with what info is out there on me.  Wasn't till my wife died that I started to get more involved with online information resources (like this forum) or even facebook (which I used to communicate to those who were linked to my wife's profile) -- which is eroding my anonymity.

Also helps that there are two others in the US with my exact name (First, Middle, Last) and another in Canada.  What info that is found that isn't theirs is usually disinformation that I've seeded out there one way or another.

Tis funny, we have no privacy, but if your not on someone's list, why bother giving them something to put you on a list.

On a side note, there's a member on this forum, who's handle makes me wonder if they are not one of the other two here in the states that have my name.  I believe one of them is a retired fireman or worked in the law enforcement business - can't quite remember as it's has been a while since I ran all the info I could dig up.

BTW, I'm not paranoid, just don't want to be careless.  ;D

I'm too dumb to spell my license plate numbers correctly so it doesn't matter if they're posted.
