Dead lifters, rockers, and Piston/Ring wear at 20k miles??
« on: January 08, 2011, 02:26:16 PM »

Been having some rocker box noise lately and so took it to HD for 20K service... Figure if their is a problem the extended warranty will cover things. Just got a call from HD tech and he tells me that "rocker arms are wore out and lifters have scaring..." among other things. Warranty going to cover that which is nice... He also said "the piston and ring clearance is at it's max and really need to be addressed..."  It's a wear item so that's out of pocket. Is it me or does 20K miles seem VERY early for this stuff to be happening at all. I ride a lot but take VERY good care of this bike. 2500 oil change, watch levels, etc... yea, I ride it hard but this just seems like excessive wear for only 20K. On the bright side, Folsom HD is taking good care of me with 20% off anything not covered by warranty but still... these bikes cost way too much dang money to have this kind of wear at 20k miles IMO.

Piston to ring clearance as a wear item at 20k miles?  And it was discovered when they had no reason to have the heads off?  Sorry but something(s) there don't pass the sniff test.  I'd have told them to fix the warranteed item and leave the rest.  Then ask them how long before a failure for oil consumption would mean they'd be fixing the rest on their dime.

What Don said...X2

Are you sure they pulled the heads? What was their "reason" for pulling the heads?

Once metal starts moving in the system it takes out EVERYTHING. Too many get lulled into thinking they can flush and they will be fine. Rod bearings being one hidden dilema.

One of my main concerns actually... I'm paying them a visit on Tuesday.

Man Chuck......I sure hope it's not "normal" wear and tear at 20k.  I've got almost 25k on my 2010 SESG. :nervous:

Just had my cylinders replaced under waranty for the same thing.  I was complaining about excesive oil consumption and was told the cylinders were out of spec.  Don't know how or why at 25,000 they would be bad, but I paid the extended waranty deductable and thats it.

Mine went at 21k. Cost me 3k to have an indy do it. Least I am confident of quality labor and parts. One of my cylinders had rust in it, yours? While it's down, have them replace the compensator with a SE compensator, another weak point.

Piston/ring wear at 20K - ridiculous!  I have 40k+ and use nil oil.  I did have new lifters required, however, all covered under ESP.
