GPS install on 2011 Convertible?
« on: January 12, 2011, 06:10:09 PM »

Has anyone installed a gps on their cvo softail?  I am thinking of mounting my Zumo 550 on tech mount system.  They have one that fits the 1 1/4 inch bars on the 2011 model.  I am wondering how it would look?

This is what I used on my ConV to mount my Garmin 255. It is basically works like a giant zip tie with the benefit of being able to be quickly removed and does not mark or scratch the handlebars.

So far it has worked flawlessly for 4K miles. I ran power to it routed under the tank and the cable tucks away neatly when the bracket is removed. My main goal was to be able to go quickly from the touring back to the cruiser config and for this mount is brilliant.

Well after being assured that the Harley mount would work, I bought one at Orlando HD. It didn't and today I have to bring it back. So I have just ordered the one you suggested. Costs only $8.25 plus shipping at Amazon.com.I paid extra for 24 hour shipping, it should be here tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Looks like they solved the decision on where to put the GPS on the 2012 Convertable.

Have you ever used it without the fairing? And if so, is it strong enough to hold it in position?

I installed the nice chrome mount on my 2010 and it fits fine.  As I stated in the thread below I had to slide it down the handle bar slightly.  My bars are 1 1/4, but are smaller diameter on the ends where the grips are.  All I did was slide the chrome mount a little bit and I could tighten the clamp fine.  I've had it on for a year.

Anyone install a sound system on 2010 softail convertible?
« Reply #6 on: August 04, 2011, 06:25:57 PM »

I bought my FIRST MC a 2010 Softail Convertible.
The 2011 came out with a mp3 player for tunes, I can get all the parts for this for my 2010 a bit pricey $2100.
It is only money! Comes and Goes mostly goes!
Has anyone put this system on their 2010? Any problems? Like it or not
What I would really like to install is some type of satellite radio setup.
Any ideas out there?
Thank you much

I got a quote for all of the parts from Fairfield Harley in Ohio and it was only $1400.00  It's still a lot, but not anywhere near what you got.

Is that for the GPS or the MP3.

I'm thinking the way to go is with the 2012 GPS 665. I'll have NAV/MP3 & XM Radio..

That was for all the parts for the sound system.  I was thinking of converting my 2010 windshield to a 2011 style.  Now that the 2012 is out, I may change my direction.  I'll have to see if I can get the parts and if they'll fit my current setup.  I already have the GPS with a handle bar mount.

I added the Fatboy Headlight so I'm sticking with the Fatboy Windshield. I already have a J&M CB Radio on her bike (left hand handlebar mount) so the GPS in the center of the Windshield will be perfect. It will replace the Riders Claw iPod on the right side and give her GPS, XM and MP3. It will plug into the AUX port of the CB with it's own volume control same as her iPod. The J&M Headsets sound awesome and mutes when we talk on the CB. So far, she hasn't wanted cruise control so I think I'm doing okay with the 2010.. She wants locking bags but I'm getting her a matching Tourpac instead. I have to do what I can to make her bike more desirable (to her) than the newer models or you know what will happen.

If I hadn't already purchased this bike I would definitely get a 2012.. it's what the 2010 should have been.

Pegus,

I have used it without the fairing and it holds fine. Keep in mind the Garmin I am using is much lighter than the 665 unit but I like having a smaller pocketable unit. Another advantage of a low cost unit is I don't worry about leaving it on the bike for shot stops or rain or dropping it or anything else. I would have to lose one 6x over before getting close to the price of the 665. There are trade-offs to be sure but this has worked out well for me do far.

I have a Garmin 660 connected to a chrome arm on my 2011 and I regularly use it without the fairing at speeds up to about 80mph. So far there have been no signs of it coming, even at highway speeds. I must admit it did worry me a bit so I attached a short piece of cord with a safety hook to the side of the Garmin, which I simply put over the chrome arm, just in case it did come loose whilst I was riding. This would at least stop it falling onto the tank and hopefully buy me enough time to be able to stop to prevent any damage to bike or sat nav. Let me know if you'd like a picture of this mod.
