Thanks Mr. Magloo, those are all great info and I've bookmarked for future reference, however they've all utilized straight forward installs of the fairing mount with the dashpad. I'm specifially trying to install the fairing mount without using the dash pad...so, I'm looking for anyone who has done this. I'm hoping that there isn't too much necessary modification of this mount or fabrication of something new. Thanks again.

So...Has anyone had success doing this without the dash pad?

Doc,

Why don't you want to use the padded dash? If you think about it, without the dash pad, which juds out an extra 1/2" to 1" , the mounted 660 would be even closer to the windshield, and then the 2 pouch won't even fit. Also, due to interference in the back, and guage visibility, you can't move the mount location much, so to do this on any level you will have to get rid of the T-Bags 3 pouch and go with the 2 pouch. I already explained how you can get the 2 pouch to work with it, and it's a nice upgrade, so I'm just not following you here?

Why not just mount the GPS on the handlebar with either the HD chrome mount, or an aftermarket mount, like Techmount?  Drilling holes into the painted inner fairing that won't be covered up with the dash pad is something I wouldn't do in a million years unless there were no other options.

Nice find Naitram!  I don't think anyone's caught that yet!

However, I'd agree with TCnBham. There's a pretty big bunch of connectors you have to fit through the hole that you have to drill in the inner, which will absolutely be showing.  I can't fathom how knarly that will look?

the pdf for that part was posted on the site at one point and it all stays hidden but its at least 1 /4" dia hole for the wires.

whether or not to do this is up to DOC just giving him the option he is looking for

Looks like they have you cut a 11/16" hole to pass the fuse and pigtail. Seems small, as I had to get close to 1", but they do include a grommet to help cover. Will still be quite noticeable!

DOC.COFFIN, you've got a lot of great help here and guidance regarding the pouches. You've already been told a few times that your existing 3 pouch will not work with any of these mounts.  The padded dash pulls the mount another 1/2" to 1" away from the windshield and dash, and you still cannot fit the 3 pouch or the stock 2 pouch for that matter. So, I'm not sure how you think going without the padded dash will give you more clearance?

I told you I was able to get the 2 punch to fit by modding it, and it would have never fit if the mount was closer to the windshield - which is exactly what's going to happen going without the padded dash.  As it is, when I have the 660 in the cradle, it's bumped up right against the left pouch and interferes with opening and closing the flap.  To make it work, you will have to come up with some sort of spacer to pull the mount further away from the dash to get anything to fit behind.

Good luck man.

Have you seen one of these mounted on the bike?  It is a very clean look and is right in your face, unless of course you have 14" apes or something for bars.  With this, and the ways we have now of making it all interface to the radio, it makes life much easier than when we had to come up with solutions on our own, like the Techmount, modifying the radio, etc.  This photo is on a RG, so on a Batwing, it would be even closer to the fairing, but still allow you to keep your three bag setup on the dash, like you have now.  Not trying to tell you anything one way or the other, but this just seems like a simple solution that satisfies all your needs, without buggering up the inner fairing in any way.

You don't have to drill such big holes to install. I have this fairing mount on my 09 SG with a Zumo 550 (same mount). Cut the positive and neg. wires at the power connection end, use a 5/16" drill bit to drill the holes as per the template use 1/4x20 bolts with locknuts to mount the bracket to fairing put the cable thru the middle hole and use butt connectors to the fuse holder and neg connection. The switched power and neg is is taped to the harness just below the headlight. I am trading in this bike, I just removed the bracket tonight, and got 5/16 black plugs from Lowes to push in the 3 mount holes the plugs look very clean and good.  I didn't have any pouches just the GPS bracket

Good luck

Wayne, you are aware the cables are different between a 550 and 660 right? He's got a 660 not a 550. No 660 cable is going to fit through a 5/16" hole. I've attached a picture where you can see the loom with the black plastic spreader that branches out the connectors from the single cable. That's the problem with the non-removable cable they went with with the 660's.
