Balance the Rotor
« on: January 15, 2011, 08:53:23 AM »

While changing to a 30t drive I thought I would check the rotor balance.
Couldn't`t believe how out it was. Got it ballanced now and this should make a big difference when I get`er back together.

I also broke apart the clutchpack and checked it. Neither the inner or outer clutch shell needed work.
There are two washers held in by an internal spiral clip on the inner clutch shell. One washer is cup shaped is compressed with a
hydraulic press to install the spiral lock . Harley does not sell this internal spiral lock separate. Its for a 1.75 bore and is double wound.
I bent mine but finally found one at Grainer in Chicago. This washer had to come out to get the inner clutch assy. on the balancer.

I am thinking about changing my sprocket also, what does balancing the stator do?

Lets the motor run a little smoother especially and higher rpm when running through the gears.

Your actually balancing the rotor not the stator .

Thanks for the tip. What's all entailed in balancing the rotor?

This is what I used. Gets it down to where a piece of tape on one side swings to the bottom.

Balance Masters is still in business and while stories seem to pop up about these products coming undone inside the primary case, I have been using BM for years and have not had this happen once. They make balancers for the compsproket assembly and the clutch assembly that are easily installed and can be removed when trading or selling the motorcycle.

FYI, I have no vested interest in Balance Masters, nor do I sell their products.

Here is how much metal had to be removed from the rotor to get it to static balance. Harley used to do this on the Evo engines.
Now I guess they just run it like it is.
