So I go to take my fairing off
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:07:37 AM »

I was trying to see if the Zumo would work with the stock fairing.  I go to remove the screws and guess what?  The tow lower screws, the ones all the way down by the forks are missing!  Gone!   With only 497 miles on the clock I doubt they vibrated out.  I don't know what they do during prep, but I know these were missing when I rode out of the dealer three weeks ago.  So, what did I pay for again?  Ok, no problem, I had two spares on the shelf.  Then, when putting them in one dropped.  Apparently it dropped into a black hole, because it is now gone too.  Can't find it anywhere.  Dammit, now I have to ride to the dealer.  Maybe this bike is haunted.

This happened to me (and probably many others) when putting the fairing back on. :( If you have one try using one of those telescoping magnets and search around right under where those screws go in and you'll probably find it. I had to go out and buy one of those magnets first time I lost mine. :sauer005:

I also stick a magnet in the area when I take them out or reinstall just in case.

I locktite two short studs to replace the two screws into the threaded mounting holes.  Then remove/install nuts instead of the screws when removing/installing the fairing.  Much easier (for me, anyway) to handle the nuts than screws...

You will find that lost screw someday.  Have a few extra screws also-from experience like you.    :cherry:

If the magnet search doesn't work, pull the chrome cover off (I think its three screws) and the fairing screw will be there, don't ask me how I know ... LOL

You'll find it...in your tire!

It most likely landed next to the fork tube...towards the outside...go to northern tool and buy one of the above mentioned magnets and a small mirror...its there!

x 2  After moving lots of chit out of the way and scouring the garage floor for over an hour I finally pulled the cover and there it was!  Since then (over 5 years ago) I always stuff a rag around the area below the hole just in case I drop the screw.  And of course since I've been doing that I've never, ever dropped the screw again!

LOL ... I use the rag stuffing technique as well now and it works well.

I also was removing the radio once and one of the 1/4 - 20 bolts fell as I was removing it. Searched high and low for that little SOB and finally removed the oil cooler cover and there it was, WTF? It amazes me that screws and nuts find the most difficult little areas to come to rest.
