Dealers taking any off MSRP? How much to expect?
« on: January 21, 2011, 07:49:49 PM »

I never bought a new bike and I'm terrible of negotiating.  I was looking at the CVO Convertible, does anyone have a ballpark price what they think I could expect to get a 2011 Out The Door at?

Thanks!

MSRP - $29.599.00
Freight - ??
Tax - ??

Any more then that you should find another dealer... Some dealers will not even charge freight since they already have profit built into MSRP. Just remember that there are a lot of dealers out there... some of which are at the doorstep of closing... in other words this is a buyers market... find a dealer that realizes that he can't eat filet mignon every night but a bologna and cheese sandwich will keep "miss meal cramps" away vs not eating (making a sale) at all.

A few dealerships are selling below MSRP.

If you're not very good at negotiating, there's still a bit of hope.  Determine how far you are willing to travel to work the deal then start contacting the dealerships within that radius to find out if they have that particular model in stock (or on it's way) that doesn't have a deposit on it.

Shoot them an email indicating where you live (for tax purposes) and that you would like to know the "out the door" cost of that bike.  You should mention that you're shoping for the best deal so that they'll give you their best price.

Where are you located?  There are a couple of dealers in my area that sell for MSRP with no add-on cost - other than taxes.

I am sure that is true for other members also - that there are dealers in there area that do the same... MSRP plus taxes only.. or maybe even some under MSRP...

Good advise from all. You may also try to include a extended warranty or accessories that you may want to add. for no co$t. JMO kb

Dealers that sell below MSRP are EXTREMELY rare. When I bought my 2010 SEUC last year, I phoned and e-mailed over 70 dealers to find the bike and the color that I wanted. Out of all of that correspondence, there were not any dealers that were below MSRP. I would guess that around 25 of those dealers contacted were above MSRP. And believe it or not  -- two of the dealers contacted had the bike I wanted, but did not want to sell it to me, because they did not want to deal from out of state, and said they had local customers that were "interested" in buying the bikes. Now that, IMO is nuckin futs.

It depends on the dealer, and also depends on the bike you want to purchase.  The pure touring models...they tend to sell fast, so dealers are usually unwilling to negotiate much on them.  The "other" models sometimes are not in as much demand, so any given dealer might be willing to negotiate a bit on those models.  The Convertable might be one of those.  You should never have to pay more than MSRP...there are plenty of dealers who will sell at that price.  The "dealer prep" charge is something that is for sure negotiable, as is an extended warranty, if you want to get one.  Taxes are going to be charged, regardless, and most will have some kind of doc fees and/or want to charge the freight, which is the same for all HD models.  Now is a good time to buy a bike, as winter is generally slow sales...if you wait until March, it may be a different ballgame.

If you can find the CVO softail at a dealer near you ...grab it at MSRP ... they are in demand in SE area and dealers are not taking anything off ... I got freight waived, and a $500 soupon to spend in the store ... and I am lucky to get the color bike I wanted ... good luck , but dont shop too long or the softail CVO's will all be taken...regards, ben
