I had been able to ride the whole season without one trip to the shop with Lexi this year until near the end of the riding season.  She was spewing oil out the A/C again. The shop changed the breather caps, separators and butterfly from the breather system as a lot of oil lying on top. This helped some but the problem persisted. I pm-ed with hd-dude (Jim) who recommended checking the oil pump.

I had been talking with TR @ T-Man about his new grind 590 cams which are suppose to be quieter than the original grind 590's I was currently running. So I dropped Lexi off @ my HD dealer to have em instal the new cams and check the oil pump. Upon opening up the cam chest they found the cam tensioners to have excessive wear. See pics on this thread.

The shop calls to say they are closing for good. I need to get my scooter quickly before the legal hassles start about what is left in the shop. I set the day to pick her up. I'm told on the day I pick her up the Wood Directional Roller Lifters had been over looked but they did a "quick install" as I was on my way to get the scooter. They have no wrench left to work on anything, they are sorry but they are done.

I get the scoot trailered home. Get her off the trailer and fire her up to pull her in the garage. The motor had made a slight tick before. Now she sounds terrible, everywhere. It's so bad I pulled her the 20 ft into the garage and turn her off.

I check with a number of people on who's a good wrench. Strokerjlk / Jim Kennedy comes up from several sources. I contact Jim and give him a brief history (man, I wish her history was brief) on Lexi. I trailer her down to Jim.

He advises he will do a compression test as well as a look see in the cam chest to insure the tensioners are installed correctly.

He text me the next day to tell me the following
AFR at idle - rear cylinder 16.7 -1  front cylinder 15.8 - 1
He adds that this motor has serious noise. It is so bad he turned her off not wanting to cause possible further damage.

He gets a hold me several days later to inform me he has the cam chest open. It does not appear the oil had been change, nor the cam chest cleaned up as tensioner shaving are contaminating the whole cam chest.

The specks are cam tensioner pieces.

This residue is fine like powder. (Or as Jim called it "stripper dust")  He now has the top end pulled down. The pistons are carbon badly.

The front head gasket was leaking allowing oil into the front cylinder stud hole. It was full of oil.

The cylinders actually look better than expected.  Not good by any means, he just expected worse.

They are going back to Ron @ Axtell for boring/honing as well as new piston and rings as necessary.

The cylinder studs were not installed per specs and the head bolts were not torqued properly.

He found one of the oil pump bolts to be loose as well as one of the cam plate bolts. The tensioners were assembled correctly but they did not float on the spring as they should. He took em apart again and reassembled them. They seem to be fine now.

So I'm having him split the case to clean all the contaminates out. Replacing the oil pump, oil cooler and hoses. Dropping the oil pan for cleaning also.

I wish I did not love this bike.

So when the shop warned you the bike needed to be picked up before legal issues gobbled things up did you think your own proceedings later might be more of those issues?  Or you just going to say "screw it" and be done with them?
