Update: Lexi's fired up!

How's this for a guy keep you up to date. @ 0153 hrs Jim leaves me a text message – “Just got it fired up……it’s a lot quieter. Little valve train noise but it was only running 2 min wooo hooo.”  You gotta love it when your builder adds a wooo hooo!

I spoke to Jim this morning. Lexi has a little valve train noise but is significantly quieter than before. Jim believes the Wood Directional Roller Lifters are still pumping up. He talked with Bob Wood at the Cinci V-Twin GTG at lenght on these lifters and how to set em up. Jim also told me the motor has quieted down even more after just two heat cycles.

Jim made a number of modifications to work on the noise issue. The lifters were not properly adjusted. The original adjustable pushrods showed some shiny areas from rubbing so these have been replaced with the adjustable SE tapered rods. The rocker boxes were not relieved on both sides so Jim relieved these areas also. All these modifications may have helped quiet the motor down. Jim feels boring and honing the cylinders was money well spent.

I also had Jim replace the HD oil cooler with a horizonal Jagg 10 row oil cooler.

Wooo Hooo! no pics.

Thanks Scott!

I agree Neil. From what digging I've done on the tensioners, it is my belief they were re-assembled incorrectly which caused the major damage. However, when I got them turned over to me, they were in the proper order. So  :nixweiss:

I feel certain in Scott and Brad's cases, this is not the case tho.

The extreme heat seems to be a tune issue.

Redline Transmission fluid!  That's the drain plug passage for the transmission lubricant...   :2vrolijk_21:

I got a call from Jim. He’s got my scooter pretty much done including dyno tune. He was very happy with the motor. He says it is much quieter. He also said she’s “a torque monster”. However, he was disappointed in the final horsepower numbers.  See attached sheet.  I can’t wait to see how she runs. 120 ft lb from just shy of 2500 to 4600 rpm should be exciting. She drops from there but that’s a lot of power in the range I ride the most! Good for a bagger.
Jim did a great job keeping me informed all along the way, sending pics and a video as well as answering a lot of questions.  :2vrolijk_21:

I told Jim this motor has historically made good torque with below average horsepower.  I can’t wait to ride her to see how she feels. However, Jim and I did talk at length on what may be causing the low horsepower numbers. Jim said there’s an air flow issue with this build.  He talked about the pipes, throttle body, and/or the heads not flowing enough for this build.  I went all the mods I have done with this motor.

I had the D&D Fat Cats w/ Quiet baffles on this build before. However I really like two pipes on a bagger and was not interested in a falsie. I talked with Greg (04SE103) about the BUB 7 True Duals. Based on his results I decided to give them a try. A dyno was done comparing the D&D F C with the BUB 7 T D. The BUB 7 T D had the torque come on earlier. At around 4200 rpm the pipes were even on torque with the D&D F C carrying the torque out longer from that point but only by a couple of ft lbs. The D&D F C made 3 more horsepower but that was after 5000 rpm. Based on these results, I am happy with the BUB 7 T D. Love the look and the sound  in comparison to the D&D F C.  See http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=42383.msg646310#msg646310

Next I told Jim I used to have the SE 58 throttle body on this build. I switched to the stock HD 50mm throttle body which has been bored to 54mm by HPI. I had a dyno comparison on the two throttle bodies. Again the differences are slight. The SE 58mm starts to make more hp than the HPI 54mm around 4600 rpm.  The end result is the 58mm beats the 54mm by 2 horsepower at 6000 rpm. It should be noted this comparison was done with the D&D Fat Cats. The HPI modified 54mm throttle body was on the build during the pipe comparison dyno.
See http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=41033.msg630858#msg630858

So if I kept the D&D Fat Cats as well as the SE 58mm throttle body, I may have gained 5 horsepower. This still seems low for this build.  The constants on this build have been T-Man 590 cams and T-Man Stage 3 heads (1.94 intake / 1.615 exhaust / 90cc). If I get a bug about this build, I may flow these heads to see if they are the issue. However I highly doubt they are. I’m incline to believe I’m going to love the torque and power being right in the area I ride and say screw it. FWIW.

I just hope Lexi's PMS days are over with!
