Hard Starting 110 cu. in
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:26:24 PM »

I have a question. I have a SEUC3 and it is going on 3 years old. I think my battery is weak but dealer said battery tests okay. My question is when it gets cold the bike refuses to start. It starts to turn over and then click click click(fast clicks) like the battery is low. Now before the tides turns let me say that the bike is on a battery tender and in an unheated garage not connected to the house. It gets cold out there and I live n Colorado so it gets down in the 20s and below 0 at times. I took it in to have everything checked and Sun tested charging system and battery and, of course, said everything was fine. Did it again on Saturday. Checked with meter and there was not 300 CCA when I metered it. After I get it started it is fine for the day. I think the battery is weak and should be replaced. I Thought I would ask before I spent $150 or so for a new battery. Any opinions or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance

If you don't want to blindly replace the battery, check the cables ensuring that the connections are clean and tight.  Check voltage at the starter both static and while cranking it.  I've had to replace my cables as the HD cables are crap.

I am with the group on this, 3 years to me is a long time on a Harley Battery even if it is on a charger when not in use.  Before the sealed batteries came along, I used to have them go out in half that time up north.

thanks...that is what I thought. I checked everything. the connections and with a meter. So I guess after the snow storm I will go down and buy a Harley battery. It looks like their battery is the best one for the Ultras. Is there something out there that I do not know about? Sears, Interstate, etc.

First rule, check for voltage drop/high resistance in both the positive and ground circuits.  The best battery in the world can't overcome high resistance, especially when cold.

Second rule, do a proper load test (which is what that dealer should have done) if you want to determine the real status of the battery.  If it passes a properly performed load test with flying colors, it's not a battery problem.

Three years is nothing for a properly maintained AGM battery.  I've had my OEM batteries last 6 and 5 years on the last two bikes, both standard Harley AGM batteries.  The ones on my 4 wheeled vehicles have lasted at least 5 years as well. Rather than throw away batteries based on age, I recommend a greener approach of changing them out (and recycling them of course) when proper testing indicates they need to be replaced.

Sounds like you need a battery to me also. I guess you could put a heater close to the bike...but might not be worth the trouble.

3 years is about all I ever get out of a battery.  It's time for a new one.
