Scissor jack recommendations?
« on: February 01, 2011, 06:59:15 PM »

What is being used for scissor lifts under bikes for those of you with table lifts?

Mine gets used a fair bit.  Between my bikes and the locals it gets used.  The scissor lift I've got is about shot now though.

Wasn't terribly expensive.  Less than a hundred bucks.  But only lasted a couple years.  One before it lasted about the same.  Even with lubing the long screw shaft and normal care.

So what's anyone else using that might hold up better?  Or should I just be happy with about $50 per year of service and forget about it?

That's good enough for me.  Was already looking at that one anyway.  Thanks.

Now y'all are just trying to make me feel stupid.  It's not my fault buying what I bought last time.  It was cheap.  It was local.  And Dood told me to.  It's Dood's fault.

TwoLane,,

I have the same jack sandbar has and needed a second backup and purchased one of these from EBay last month http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160514324250#ht_3689wt_1167  The EBay version is everything the $250 jack is for 2/3 less cost. I honestly cant tell any difference between the two. I dont see any reason why not the $85 jack....  :2vrolijk_21:

That one looks almost identical to the one I've worn out twice.  The pancake bearings where the screw shaft meets the body don't hold up.  Once they go the screw shaft galls.  It just gets progressively more difficult to work from there.

Can't tell from the photo whether there's a hex head under that little spinner handle they show.  If not that'd be enough to keep me off this one.  Want a socket and a long ratchet for easy use.

If you're going to buy a scissor jack I'd strongly recommend getting one that uses a scissor action. But that's just me.

I've only had this one for a few weeks, so not enough time to check longginivity. There is a hex head on the spinner and very possible the same one you had trouble with. When comparing the two side by side, I don't see a big difference, but that doesent mean the material is same.  This is a backup, so it might work out for this purpose, time will tell. The one sandbar suggested should be fail safe, if you need to depend on its use 100% think I would stick with his recommendation  :2vrolijk_21:

Harbor Freight Tools, you can get this on Sale for $72.00.
I have had one for the last four yrs with no issues, just used it to remove a fuel tank on my truck to replace the electric fuel pump in the tank, made it very easy to do on my back.
