My Grandfather who was born in Germany and was a great warm bear drinker used to go to Canada to catch turtles with a bunch of his buddies.  I asked one time how he kept from getting bit, he told me they always go in head ist, I said Pop what if it is a stupid turtle he told me it would hurt.  Never tried it by hand but have caught them up to 25 lbs on jug lines in my ponds before, great eating fried and makes great soup too.
