Inner Fairing w/s inserts
« on: February 05, 2011, 06:50:45 PM »

Guys I need some help I have stripped out one of my windshield bolts in the inner fairing. The insert is just spinning in the plastic. What is a simple way to repair? don't want to purchase a new painted inner fairing. It is the one toward my clutch.

Thank's for the help  Lee

Mix up a  little quick set JB weld, put it around the insert and slip it back in... that chit will fix anything..

When you get it repaired don't overtighten the screws.  I use a torx bit in a screwdriver and snug them up real good.  Don't overdo it by using a ratchet wrench on them.

In this instance the old plumber's motto (If thight is good then tighter is better.) definitely does not apply.   :2vrolijk_21:

HD also makes replacements that go in like Heli-coils. A large flat blade screw driver installs them. I can post the part number tomorrow.

Harley makes inserts to replace the push in pieces, I have them on my bike. Drill and tap the inner fairing and screw the inserts in, never deal with them again.

I had one hole on my '09 SERG that seemed to be stripping out when I last installed the frontend.

I just cut a short, about .5" long, piece of a small cable tie and stuck it in the hole and then put back in the screw.  This did the job and I was able to move on with my life.  That would not be a permanent fix, but I did no further tear down and will leave that for a more opportune time.

So if you don't want to tear it back down, just slip in a short piece of a small cable tie and put the screw back in and tighten it down and ride.

Just my 2ยข...

 16585-96 Threaded insert
I just found that I have 3 sitting in my toolbox, and the upper 3 is all that is needed on a batwing style. A little grease/lube when installing is a good idea, as the slotted brass will easily break during install, go ahead and ask how I know.....Let me know if you want them,  Dave
